Dang, that scene rings true. Thirsk got whacked.
If Khapahr had an audience to convince, it would have been inquisitors. They wouldn't take kindly to his admission of respect. If this was faked and he was wearing balaistic underwear, there would be no blood to convince onlookers. The only options I see are either Khapahr truly did try to kill Thirsk or he shot Thirsk knowing he wore ballistic undies as a prelude to kill any inquisitors present. Of the two options the former tings truer. Thirsk would be really reluctant to trust anyone from Charis. He would have to to be wearing ballistic undergarments. It is more likely that Thirsk was shot by Khapahr. |

We don't know what preceded this. Thirsk may well have been driven to the point where he had no choice but to defect, and he had had a visit from a female seijin who provided him with the ballistic undies and a blood bag which bursts convincingly when it is shot - we just don't know. We don't even know how far into the book this except is from is it from near the end, when it has become obvious that the church has lost. It it just after Thirsk gets his first look at the Haarld VII' and realizes his navy is completely screwed regardless of what he does, or when or the circumstances following it. Is the shot fired just before a group of inquisitors burst in the door to arrest Thirsk for questioning, or what. ========================

Good job of observing. I remember a similar snippet waiting for LAMA in which Hektor had received a mortal wound. We had fun with that one for weeks... Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Hmm, perhaps an elaborate escape using bullet proof undies, a bladder of blood while the church representative(s) looks on, hater a weighted casket is burred. The Church releases Trisk's family and, all escape.

Hi Don,
I'll certainly say we did, every permutation and twist possible. Does anyone care to share the details of what we missed or is it too embarrassing? Now looking for #15 soon. L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

I can see this one being legit. I'd like to see him swap sides, too, but having all the competent military commanders on only one side doesn't make sense for the storyline. Maybe he got caught setting up his exit plan. Maybe he came in second in a fleet engagement and, as has happened before, he takes a bullet (from a loyal subordinate trying to save him from the Inquisition) as the price of failure. It's not like the Church hasn't killed off a commander for losing before. |

I'm still not 100% convinced it's not a case of creative editing for the snippet. The phrase "direct quote" can be stretched to encompass some misdirection, as long as the words themselves are quotations. We dont know for certain that "My Lord" refers to Thirsk, and we dont know for certain that the "earl" shot by the bullet was actually Thirsk. |
