I hope not. Ginger's one of my favorite 'damn sneaks' that isn't a shooter, and she's likely headed towards XO status sooner than later. I think I might let Horace tutor Aubry in the fine art of "hack anything" just to make the sims on that ship REALLY nasty. ---------------------

Great big jaw drop... unless I missed a post along the way, y'all overlooked the greatest example of a platonic relationship in the whole set of books. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.
Ginny Usher and Victor Cachat. HANDS DOWN. Read Crown of Slaves and I dare ya to disagree... Yes, she torments the heck out of him by playing the flirt, but there are only two people in the universe she really trusts, her husband and Victor, then eventually Zilwicki, Palane, and a few others. For goodness sake, she sleeps in his arms without fear of even getting fondled. For his part, given that Thandi Palane is going to be uber hard to kill but is in the line of fire, I think someone going after Ginny -- who is still a civilian by any stretch of the imagination -- would unleash the bezerker in Cachat pretty quickly, and the results would -- uh, not be pretty. ---------------------

Yeah, but would Kevin Usher get there first? ========================

I guess it depends on where Ginny's at if/when an attempt happens. Let's have them arrive at about the same time, Ginny kidnapped but not dead. Twice the mayhem, force multiplied by Thandi and Anton coming along. Maybe by this time the Ushers have one or more treecats (wouldn't you like to be a fly on THAT wall?) just to make things cruel. ---------------------

Sheesh. The results would not be gentle or uncertain. I suppose they wouldn't be pretty either, but there seems to be this image of Victor Cachat as some sort of WMD about to go off whenever someone hits the wrong button. He's not. He's the most precision-guided smart munition around, with a warhead yield that can be dialed up or down as much as the Republic of Haven's needs require. But yeah. Someone hurts Ginny Usher, someone's a dead man/woman/butthead-alien walking. I'm pretty sure the author would get some heat for that even. |

You're missing my point. True, Victor's not a WMD, he's more like a portable storm in space improvising opportunities for mayhem to occur. I think "attacking Ginny" would be his ultimate wrong button -- at least for a while -- and turn Cachat's dials all the way up, and -- as Betty Gohr notices, he doesn't hesitate even for milliseconds in kill mode. Plus all of the parties who know Ginny would give both Kevin and Victor and co. time off for engaging in bad behavior, delivering mayhem, and getting her back. Afterwards, the MA or whoever would have to generate the body count tally.... (Though I've decided that both of them wouldn't have a treecat in my little scenario, just Kevin.) ---------------------
