Having now seen the context of the statement about Bachfisch, I see I was correct. It was in Midshipman Harrington that Bachfisch believed that Dmitri Young was trying to sabotage Honor's career. Note that this was before any of Honor's exploits which gained her fame. In fact, it takes place while Honor is still a midshipman! This is probably less than a year after Honor beat Pavel half to death.
I don't think we can make any conclusions about Dmitri's later efforts based on Bachfisch's thoughts while Honor was a mere midshipman. --------------------------------------------

Nobles and competents? So White Haven and West Texas (Jim Webster) are either ignoble, or not competent? Rob |

It was Courvoisier and White Haven. Even Honor herself realized it to be so, that the rumors were true - White Haven had made her a personal project. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

Influence Abusers and Competent would be much more fitting descriptions of the groups. There are plenty of nobles who are competent officers in the RMN. |

We do know from Santino's ruminations that he was primed to respond as he did to Honor by Pavel Young whose crony he was. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

I have just gone back and reread the story. There is no textev that Santino and Pavel were cronies. Santino was already a LT, so the chances that he and Pavel knew each other at the academy are small. It is much more likely that Santino's father was a friend of Dimitri's, and Dimitri called in a favor, although there is in fact no textev of that either. Just the belief of Captain Bachfisch that Santino had been foisted off on him in order to get Harrington. ========================

Hi fallsfromtrees,
You are right. I went back and looked at what I was remembering from my dead tree hard cover p.43. It's included in that conversation between Layson and Santino when he is relieved of respomesibility for the middies. There it is inferred that he had a "private, pre-cruise briefing" which apparently warned him about Honor. Nothing is said about Pavel giving the warning. I simply assumed that's what happened. It was an a fairly natural jump to conclusions, but a jump to coclusions it was. Pavel Young and Santino probably did meet, but I would suspect that it would be the consequence of being in the same social circles rather than the academy. Again., an assumption, but I think a reasonable one. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

I expect that North Hollow (on the Naval Affairs Committee, and a former Commander) has a few old buddies and tools on his payroll; I always assumed it was Pavel's father who set it up, with the actual tool being irrelevant. This is just really early days in that particular feud. Rob |
