We have a fairly complete record of Scotty Tremaine's career. Is there any textev that he went through the crusher...or am I missing something?

The whole point of the ATC being the "Crusher" is to wash-out unqualified middle rank officers from commanding anything larger than effectively a scout ship. Honor was lucky to have been in command of Hawkwing without it, but her service record put her in that position in spite of the Pavel Young cronies doing their best to ambush her career.

For Tremaine, I'm also thinking that he went to ATC after Buttercup during the five year hiatus. I'd also think that there might be a heretofore undiscussed version of "Crusher lite", useful when an officer has already proven that they're not going to wash out or make poor decisions in battle, or is brevet promoted in battle due to the injury to the remaining superior officers.

Not the right Navy but consider Oliver Diamoto in the RHN as an example. 3rd in Command starts fighting the ship effectively in the heat of battle after the admiral (Kellet), Flag Captain (Hall) and XO (in AuxControl) are dead..."

As a similar example to Tremaine, Naomi Kaplan -- terribly injured at Monica but soon thereafter assuming the command of a DD in 10th Fleet. AKA she must have gone through the ATC while in convalescence. It seems likely that you go from being the "command" tactical officer on a ship to the ATC by the way, meaning that Abigail Hearns is about due for the Crusher.

Has anyone every posted how long the ATC is supposed to last?

Actually, I do wonder if there's a crusher lite for those slated to command support ships. If only in recognising a bad situation and how to get out of it. Ginger for example.

Six months. Honor mentioned in narration that her "six months at ATC" were some of the happiest - if most stressful - of her life.

Took me a bit to find that quote, it was in Ashes of Victory. I wanted to double check if that was the duration of ATC when she took it, or the duration she acted as it's commander. (It was the former)

Ashes of Victory: Chapter 8 wrote:The ATC Center was also on Saganami Island, attached to the Academy campus, but it was a completely separate facility, with its own faculty and commandant. Honor's own time there had been among the most exhausting and mind-numbing of her career, but it had also been one of the most exhilarating six T-months of her entire life. She'd loved the challenge, and the fact that ATC's commandant at the time had been Raoul Courvosier, her own Academy instructor and beloved mentor, had only made it better.
But keep in mind that Honor took the course in the somewhat less rushed pre-war days. I know Saganami Island accelerated the curriculum for the basic midshipman's course, but I don't know if the ATC also got compressed any or if it's still the same 6 T-months it was when Honor took it.

Hi Rob,

I don't think that anyone intends to imply that the command route is set in stone, but it does seem to be true that the usual route is through the tactical track.

Hi Don, just saw this today. In the books, tactical is the fast track; but the other tracks get there too; else why the tension between Abby and the comms officer? You just give the non-tactical types a good XO, as Webster had in HAE; or the role Cpt Shoupe helps fill on Khumalo's staff.

And back in the day, Honor did a tour as 'sailing master' on the frigate HMS Osprey; can you imagine her training sims for astrogation, given her math-phobia? Almost like Helen, on the way to Spindle. Mostly, unless they were just rotating you around, that ought to maybe be an astrogation specialist's slot?

Anyway, RFC will either put something in the text that is more definative, or . . . he won't.

Someone downthread is saying something about Kaplan going through the Crusher--but I don't know if she did, given the convalescent time for her injuries. If the course is still 6 months, there wouldn't have been time before Hexapuma got back from Monica. I think she got command of the Tristram without it; maybe someday we'll know.

:D :D

It's also possible that Naomi took it before her tour on Hexapuma. I'm not aware of any textev that would either confirm or deny that possibility.

I don't think you can get recommended for ATC until you are under consideration for command. In other words, you generally go straight from ATC to your new command.
