Sorry if I missed an earlier discussion, but I wonder why Honor did not take the Advanced Tactical Course ... The Crusher ... The first time around. After re-reading Let's Dance, followed by Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington, I don't understand why Capt. Courvoisier didn't arrange for that.
I have not found any textev on this. I don't see Hartley stopping it because of the Regatta flyover, so that leaves Pavel's machinations to blame. Or some new player, but I don't see support for that so far. So, did Pavel make it seem like Honor didn't make the cut? Or was there something else going on? |

Honor did take the crusher. It happened off screen before OBS, when Raoul Courvosier was the commandant. ========================

-------------- As Falls from Trees notes, it was off-screen. Go back and read the last section of Let's Dance; Honor was relieved from her DD command for 2 reasons --> 1) political, to satisfy the Sillie politicos; 2) to get her in the current (soon to start) Adv Tactical Course without undue delay (6+ months). The old term "Appearances can be deceiving" comes to mind. -- Stewart |

------------------ Additional info -- ATC is offered to those officers, generally at the LCDR / CDR level, who are seen as eligible for major commands. A current parallel is a Navy tour at Navy Post-Graduate School (used to be at Monterrey, Ca) or Army / AF tours at the Army War College -- generally a Masters / PHD level curriculum after officers have had some "seasoning" -- Stewart |

IIRC, it was right after the incident where Honor was involved in the raid on the slave station that upset the governor to the point of demanding that she be relieved of command of Hawkwing. She gets the riot act from Admiralty House and is relieved of her command. But in a sleight of hand Honor is assigned to the crusher. I think the story I'm talking about is "Let's Dance," but I don't have it at my fingertips. And I do believe you're right. It was right before OBS. Had to be before OBS, as otherwise she is not eligible for command of a light cruiser (Fearless) ========================

It needs to be said that the requirement to go through the crusher before having a command wasn't set quite so firmly in stone earlier in the story. Honor herself commanded a hyper capable command without it.
I suspect that it became more important as its value is proven and under wartime pressure. We have a fairly complete record of Scotty Tremaine's career. Is there any textev that he went through the crusher...or am I missing something? Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Textev is that it wasn't possible to command anything larger than a destroyer without having been to the Crusher and that was rare, and no, I don't recall any textev that Scotty has ever been to the Crusher. ========================

We don't have any textev that he did, but we don't have any textev that he didn't, either. Remember, he was an LAC wing commander for most of his career - I'll bet you he went through the Crusher during that five-year gap between Ashes of Victory and War of Honor. ~*~

Yah, I got that her passage through ATC was as a commander, after the action at Casimir in Let's Dance. I was under the impression that the normal passage was as a middie during the Saganami schooling, That's why I was surprised that she hadn't taken it by the time of Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington. So either the Crusher had historically been only postgraduate, or Honor somehow didn't take it during her regular schooling. My initial post assumed the latter.
