And have we had any textev that Paityr knows his family is directly related to Schueler? dropping that information, and having Paityr show the Schueler video to Aivah and her sidekick could be extraordinarily interesting.

The Wylsynn family had a strong belief that they were descended from Schueler which was supported by the message recorded in the Key.

Now Owl had discovered genetic evidence that they were descended from Schueler (it was mentioned early in LAMA) but there's no text evidence that Archbishop Maikel has informed Father Paityr of the genetic evidence. :)

I remembered that OWL had found the evidence, what I didn't remember was whether or not Paityr had been told.

Hi FallenFromTrees,

I suspect Maikel wouldn't withhold something like that from a friend like Paityr, so I think he was told pretty soon after that little revelation.

I would then expect Paityr to request OWL to find how much of Safehold is descended from Schueler.

I think RFC expects us to figure that much out without him wasting words needed elsewhere. ;)

Hi McGuiness,

I'm curious how you think Nynian is going to take Merlin out, since I'm sure his remotes have already scanned and searched her in ways she be shocked until she understands more federation tech.

Taking Nynian to the cave lets Merlin stop lying to her, something he may consider safer than not [even if he doesn't tell her about the rest of inner circle], while being able to prove all his bona fides, which is rather important to Sandaria as well.

Sandaria could easily be the first cryo guest of the cave, though I think she's made of sterner stuff, since Merlin is going to confirm a lot of what the SSK has believed or suspected for centuries.

Besides the skimmers, explaining how the Rakurai etc operate, ought to help convince her, as will meeting Paityr and Maikel and others besides Nahrmahn and OWL electronically in the cave, and their professions of faith along with Merlin's should also help her understand they still believe in God, which she might have wondered about, possibly having deep doubts, but irrevocably opposed to Clyntahn.

Knowing the CoGA is far more of a complete fraud than you had already increases the unlikelihood of running to Clyntahn or the inquisition she despises even further.

I think the options Merlin is thinking of is that in Nimue's cave he has the option of slapping the ones who do not accept the truth in cryo storage rather than needing to kill them.

Through this entire snippet I wondered how much Merlin had told Aivah, and why he was taking her to the cave. Now we know that she hasn't been initiated into the inner circle, but she's going to get an in-depth introduction to the Terran Federation and some of the tech that the "Archangels" had available to them.

Once I realized he was taking her to the cave to give her the introduction, it clicked into place that having her there would allow him to put her into cryo sleep if necessary - after all, he's already said that he'd put the head of Charisian weapons research into cryo rather than kill him, since the guy would probably respond to the truth by wanting to scream it from the nearest church steeple.

So clearly taking Aivah and her sidekick directly to the cave serves two purposes. 1) It shows them undeniable evidence that the archangels were frauds and that the CoGA which they created is the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on humanity, since those two don't have years of close friendships with members of the inner circle who can explain the Truth to them, and 2) It gives him the option of tossing one or both of them into cryo sleep if they take it badly.

I suspect Aivah will be quite shaken, but even with the foreshadowing of how she feels the church should be, the fact that it's such a force for evil in the world at the moment should help her overcome her lifelong dedication to the idea of a CoGA that functions as she feels it should. If it truly was God's church, how could He allow it to run off the rails so badly? (Plus quite a lot of the Writ isn't actually false.)

Her sidekick may not take it as well, but we may not find out that she has severe reservations until she runs to the Inquisition later. Time to plant a SNARC in her ear so she can be eliminated at need!

I'm looking forward to Aivah's meeting with Nahrmahn as well! Finding out that the entire basis of your society is a fraud is nothing compared to meeting a ghost!

Hi Anwi,

I agree almost completely with your points, but feel going to the cave has many advantages besides the security qualification, which i too don't think will be necessary.

Seeing all the equipment and meeting Nahrmahn and OWL will be very important proofs of the Federation and Operation Ark, but when the inner circle reveals themselves after witnessing Merlin's explanations at the appropriate time will help them realize just how much power and support Merlin has amassed, and thus how much information they'll have at their fingertips as well, which will also encourage them to join the inner circle.

There are two aspects to that problem: Neither Aivah nor Sandariah seem to be really shaken when they are put into an "angelic" techlevel skimmer, although none has been operated for centuries to the best of their knowledge. Descriptions by Kohdy seem to have them prepared, which is interesting in itself.
Moreover, there is no good reason for Merlin to take them to the Cave for their introduction into the truth that we readers know of as of now. But there should be, and it will be quite revealing, I guess. I would fully expect it to be related to Kohdy's diary and those sections the sisterhood does not really understand, which again hints at interesting stuff. (And I still posit that the SSK has a partial understanding of the Spanish sections.)
As to Aivah or Sandariah being put on a freeze: Ain't gonna happen. Indeed, it'd give higher odds to Aivah shutting down Merlin than to him sidelining Aivah.

Also we have textev that the Rakurai was used to destroy the original abbey of SSK. This will not dispose them to feel kindly towards the existing church hierarchy.

Hi fallsfromtrees,

I have been wondering about that and went and reread that paragraph in the snippet.

We do know that something destroyed the abbey in a rather spectacular blast. Would the rakurai referred to be the OBS? or could it have been a different precision weapon such as a ship board laser that Langhorne's henchmen had access to?

We know that the sisters believed it was the rakurai, but were they in a position to really know?

Or could the term rakurai been a generalized term to cover more than the OBS?

How's that for a poser?

If there are witnesses, and there seem to have been some sufficiently distant ground level witnesses, there's the distinctive light show of re-entry vehicles.

Not going to be much else that looks like that.

Whether or not it was the rakurai is irrelevant as far as the SSK are concerned. They believe that it was, and Merlin can show them the current status of it. I might have been something as simple as the Thunderbolt weapon proposed in the sixties as a tank destroyer. Basically a 600 kilo iron spike dropped from orbit striking the tank at 5 miles per second.
