So I guess this means I'm never going to be a Senior Command Master Chief Petty Officer.

Yes, we're officers, we don't work for a living. --

We are actually equivalent to most Royal British Admirals around the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Not assigned active duty and not getting paid. Although there was a small stipend for some. |

Unfortunately, that is very true. --

I note the recent news of the last US Vietnam War Era Draftee is only now retiring from the US Army. Chief Warrant Officer 5 Ralph Rigby, 62, has served for 42 years after going through Fort Dix in 1972. CWO5 is a rank that is as rare as hens teeth and while technically ranked below the commission ranks, it would be a VERY stupid butter bar that would expect honors. (I'm sure there were some though!) -----

I am sure that CWO5 Rigby was punctilious about offering honors to a butterbar, but when he made a suggestion about how things should be done, I would expect that said butterbar paid close attention, or else got counseling from a superior officer about the proper relationship between a butterbar and a CWO with 40 years experience. ========================
