Hi FallsFromTrees,
Hutch is right about the math, and the number of systems being between 100-201, and while there might have been abstentions etc, the popularity of the measure to end the war will hurt such weaselly mumbling nay-Sayers in the next election. RFC once mentioned the peeps had some 270 star systems, and Eloise let half leave, with disputed systems having a referendum, so it might get close to 150. Which might mean the senate is distributed according to population not system, as Charles Pickney proposed in the US constitutional convention in 1787, the largest states getting three senators [his term], the average two, and the least only one. They might be chosen according to the most votes rather than by party, so the widest range of opinion is actually represented. L

*quote="DarkEnigma"*How many systems have freely chosen to break off from Haven and what is Haven's current size compared to Manticore?*quote* Something like this came up over in the "Favorite Phrases" thread between Hanuman and roseand heathers *quote*Well, it turns out I was wrong about the treaty’s prospects,” Pritchart went on now. “According to Leslie’s dispatch, she never got a chance to pound it anywhere. The Senate jumped all over it. It was approved with a fifty-six-vote margin over and above the two thirds majority requirement. There were only eleven dissenting votes!” The president’s face blossomed in a huge smile, and Elizabeth felt herself smiling back.*quote* - A Rising Thunder Hanuman quote--*quote*Wait, can someone who can actually do some math PLEASE do the calculation? How many members does that give the Havenite Senate? *quote* by roseandheather » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:40 pm
2/3x + 56 = x - 11 2/3x + 67 = x 1/3x = 67 x = 201 201, if my math is correct. *quote* And the math works, so we know the Havenite Senate has 201 members. So..does that mean it has 201 systems, or 100 systems with two senators each (and one presiding officer), or some other division of numbers (or maybe a few senators chose not to vote, or were sick, or were back on their home planets). So IMHO, it's between 100-201 systems. Or not. This actually assumes that there were no abstentions, and that every senator voted, which may or may not be valid.*quote**quote**quote* Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

Hi FallsFromTrees,
I believe it was HAE, not IEH, so she had a couple years to recover, and quick heal is much faster than that. L
Susan Hibson lost a leg in IEH, and has had it regenerated sufficiently to be walking at Honor's funeral.
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

You're actually pretty well grounded in female biology for a dude, but there's one flaw in your logic - the nanites can't consume the placenta as it's forming, because that would be highly inconvenient should the woman in question actually be trying for a baby. I suspect the nanites break down the matter in question after menstruation has already begun, and reabsorb the components back into the body in some way. The contraceptive implant is a different beast entirely, which presumably works the way the current ones do; by releasing progesterone, which prevents ovulation altogether. (Note that this won't eliminate the menstrual lining, just make it thinner.) It would therefore be quite easy for Honor not to notice; as she's used to having a period anyway, and used to having the nanites deal with it, she wouldn't notice if she was ovulating, and voila! We have our little Surprise Alexander-Harrington. ~*~

I'm a dud...er...dude, also, but one who has been living with sisters and/or mate for a very long time. There is a further consideration that highly trained female athletes often have skips without noticeable menses of one to a few months, especially coming off hormonal based contraception. One of the major reasons for the lack on menses in women athletes is that their body fat levels are so low. A pregnant woman requires a certain amount of body fat, as hormones will break down some of the fat in order to keep the blood sugar levels fairly constant, which is good for the fetus. ========================

I had a soldier under my command, an accomplished athlete in high school, and a dedicated gym rat in service, who was so used to minimal/no menses that she did not realize that she had become pregnant in the week prior to induction. It came to light when we referred her to the division Med Bn for assistance with weight control issues, since we knew she was eating right and training hard. That was 1 week before delivery. It happens - for realsies. dreamrider |
Hi FallsFromTrees,

L

*quote="cthia"*Is there another naval officer other than Honor that doesn't regenerate?*quote*
Textev says about 30% of the Manticoran population don't regen, so presumably there's at least one other officer in the RMN who doesn't. --------------- The medically retired Marine Major in "Hard Way Home" in the anthologies was also a non-regener. Most were from Sphinx, which had a high percentage of Genies as early immigrants. There is a hint of cause / effect that some of the Genie strains could not accept regen. It is not an absolute but appears to be a recessive trait. Honor cannot regen, but Allison checked and Raul can. -- Stewart |

Well, I expect that person just can't come to any of the REALLY IMPORTANT meetings any more, and gets speculated about in the press A LOT. It will be tough, but Elouise and Tom will just have to endure it. dreamrider |

A question for anyone who has ever been in the armed forces. When singing ...
"For he's a jolly good fellow. For he's ..." What is it for a woman? "For she's a jolly good," (person or lassie)? Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |
