Reading a post by Joat42 in Snippit 11 about semaphores. The Empire could start a female Semaphore Corps. That would be a way of introducing women into the military.

Gentlemen, Some thoughts... 1. Gender equality is not a goal. It is one of the byproducts of moving to a society that fully uses all of society's resources. The Gbaba are not going to be found and destroyed by using a portion of Safehold's resources. Universal suffrage, ending slavery and serfdom, universal education, religious freedom are other byproducts of the movement to fully use society's resources. 2. Integration of women into the military IMHO should be done by setting up sub-organizations or branches within the parent service,e.g., a women's army corp. Unit structure, ranks and uniforms should be identical to the male branches. Acceptance of women is going to come from contacts between men and women where they see each other as individuals doing a job, not as a man or a woman, e.g., supply sergeant, cook, healer, armorer, mechanic, communication specialist. Outside the combat arms assigning specific jobs or specialties to male or female branches should be avoided. 3. Developments critical reaching or attaining gender "equality", or "neutrality" are universal education and the removal of the restraint of motherhood (childbearing and rearing). Two things necessary for the latter to occur are development of menstrual control devices (does that sound stilted or whoa! and development of simple and reliable birth control. 4. If the Writ defines women as childbearers, mothers or keepers of the hearth this process is gonna be a steep hill to climb. Peter, I'm not sure what you mean by metrics for judging social roles. Would you elaborate please. THanks Ed |

I am not sure about this. We do have the example of Bedard, so the concept of women as the equal of men was established by the archangels. Shan Wei was described as a archangel second only to Langhorne before she fell, so it may not be as difficult as some are suggesting. ========================

Ed, I am thinking about torts for the most part. Safehold has to have some sort of provision for harm caused to private individuals. If Safehold is behind in that, certainly Charis isn't. So, if women bring cases where an employer is claimed to have caused harm through their employment practice, the Imperial Bench will use metrics to evaluate whether harm was indeed caused. Set those guidelines properly at the start and the actual change will happen at whatever pace society will naturally drive. If many women believe they have been harmed, there will be many cases brought. If few women, the only a few cases will be brought. The metrics themselves will be gender neutral. If strength is required to do a job, any women who does not show she has comparable strength to a man doing that job has no case. In all likelihood, collusion to control who gets hired and what they get paid is the sort of case most likely to be brought. I understand that actual proof of harm will be very hard to achieve. Still taking up those cases and establishing the criteria that the bench will use to evaluate such cases is where I was going. |

Thank you. Torts hadn't occurred to me. I don't know much about writing laws but having these in place would be a major step forward. |
