I thought the USN saying was:
"You can eat anything if you serve coffee with it!"

Perhaps Imaginnos1892's quote came from a different Navy?

To belittle is to be little.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Bacteria is the only culture some people have.

The version I saw was
Don't knock yogurt - it's the only culture some people have.

And there's always George Carlin's take on it
When yogurt goes bad....how do you tell?

more government is only the answer if you’ve asked a very strange question.

governments have a tendency to abuse and expand any new powers they receive.

Thinking about the Laffer curve. If you consider all extractive means as dragging on the economy: When there is too much extraction, the economy drags to a halt. But if there are no government or cultural barriers, the rioters, looters, and other crooks start extracting. I saw an European study of the relation between government as a % of GDP and their efficiency in actually producing good results. Surprise: the highest efficiency was in the lower % brackets. 8-)

Summary: Too much government and the crooks have taken it over. Too little, and the crooks are more direct in their taking.

Nothing to see here, run along.

My father grew up in the Depression and he had to deal with a level of poverty that made me feel lucky, even when I had nothing.

This fits my parents also. My father's mother was widowed when dad was ten. Grandma always would say that there was enough for today, discuss plans about how to prepare for the next day, then work the plans. They never took welfare. They were victors, not victims. They taught their descendants! Even if we must live poor, we choose not to live in poverty ;)

Liberalism is for poor people who are content to stay poor. Conservatism is for poor people who want to make a better life for themselves.

I tell you that from experience because I have been poor.

Same source as the immediate above quote.

My sister
When hiring a professional you want a seasoned one. They usually are the ones with the salt-n-pepper hair.

Why do we think actors will make good politicians; do we subconciously think they'll throw themselves into their roles with dedication and act a good part, or is it that we want someone who can make the lies more believable?

Honorable mentions:
((Arnold Swarzenegger (Frightening to think he'll be back.))

others ...
Al Franken (Democrat) (U.S. Senator, Minnesota; incumbent)
Alan Autry (Republican) (Mayor of Fresno, California)
Arnold Schwarzenegger (Republican) (Governor of California)
Ben Jones (Democrat) (U.S. Congressman, 4th District of Georgia)
Ben Stein (Republican) (Speechwriter for Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford)
Clint Eastwood (Republican, but describes himself as libertarian) (Mayor of Carmel, California)
Frank Britton Wenzel (Mayor of Malverne, New York)
Fred Grandy (Republican) (U.S. Representative, Iowa)
Fred Thompson (Republican) (U.S. Senator, Tennessee and unsuccessful presidential candidate)
George Murphy (Republican) (U.S. Senator, California)
Helen Gahagan (Democrat) (U.S. Representative, 14th District of California)
Jack Kelly, mayor of Huntington Beach, Calif.
Jerry Springer (Democrat) (Mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio)
Jesse Ventura (formerly Reform; currently Independence Party of Minnesota) (Governor of Minnesota)
John Davis Lodge (Republican) (Governor of Connecticut)
John Gavin (Republican) (U.S. diplomat; Ambassador to Mexico)
Kal Penn (Democrat) (Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement for the Barack Obama administration)
Nancy Kulp (Democrat) (unsuccessful nominee for U.S. House of Representatives, Pennsylvania)
Raj Bhakta (Republican) (unsuccessful candidate for U.S. House of Representatives, Pennsylvania)
Ralph Waite (Democrat) (unsuccessful nominee for U.S. House of Representatives)
Robert Montgomery (Republican)
Ronald Reagan (Republican) (Governor of California, President of the United States)
Sheila Kuehl (Democrat) (California State Senator)
Shirley Temple Black (Republican) (U.S. diplomat; Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, Chief of Protocol of the United States)
Sonny Bono (Republican) (U.S. Representative, 44th District of California)
Stephen Peace (Democrat) (California State Senator)
