Even before the war, he's been violating the intent if not the letter of the writ for his own personal power grab. Now assuming the Safehold religion has an after death component similar to the Earth religions Langhorn based it on: after death there is a judgement by all powerful god and the good go to heaven the bad to hell. So Clyntahn if he were a true believer would be expecting that after death, god would judge him, knowing his every motive, not the ones he publicly espoused but his true motives. He lack of concern about this judgement indicates that he may not believe in it.

No, he's a delusional fanatic who basically believes that god is smart enough to agree with him

I think he does believe in God. Unfortunately, he also believes that God has the same opinions as he does. After all, God let him become the Grand Inquisitor, so naturally God must be on his side.
He's completely insane, of course. But he doesn't realize that himself. |

Not an athiest.
God's archangels gave Clyntahn's office the authority to do as he did. He isn't a mass murderer ONLY if those archangels had God's authority to create the Church the way they did. Every rationalizing bone in Clyntahn's body pulls him to believe in a God that lends His authority to the Church His archangels created. The Church that gives Clyntahn the effective authority to do as he pleases in regards to crushing heresy. |

My feeling is, he believes he's a reincarnation of Langhorne- and, since that's the case, everything he does has God's imprimatur on it.
Hmmm, does the CoGA have reincarnation in its canon? Don't remember seeing it, but I've been known to overlook details before.will out. Ah, well, in the end, the truth will out. ====================================

Go read "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett. You wont find a better explanation of the COGA or Clyntahn anywhere.

and how does it exactly differs from religious people who committed (and still commit) murder in holy wars, burned so called witches, stoned woman, blowed up girls schools, shot cartoonists, raped boys under the protection of catholic church, behead journalists... The whole story of human kind is full of self proclaimed righteous people, fighting the so called wickedness. With other words self serving a...s, using whatever religious/secular organisation as protection and means to achieve own ultimately self serving quests for more wealth and power. |

I think he knows the truth. That is, he knows about the federation, langhorn, everything. A prerogative of the great inquisitor, pehaps, is to be told the truth.
As a result he lost any little amount of faith he had, but became mortally afraid of the G'baba. Hence his fanaticism about the prescriptions. So, an atheist, yes. But one with more reason than most Kaezar |

That seems unlikely. If that were true, the Proscriptions would not have been twisted so much before Merlin even showed up. Clyntahn has not been fanatically protecting the Proscriptions--he has willingly let the Proscriptions be broken right and left as long as it furthered his own vision. What he has been fanatically protective of is the power of the Church, which is to say, his own power. Clyntahn has shown no evidence of knowing anything unusual, except what his spies have told him. --------------------------------------------

Atheist he isn't; like others have said he is delusional and believes whatever he does is with God's blessing because he has convinced himself his plan is God's plan.
The textref is in MTaT with the conversation between Duchairn & Trynair that Clynntahn believes his version of events is the truth and that he speaks with the voice and authority of God. |
