Our own moon has over 100,000 impact craters and earth has some as well. Who says the kinetic strikes have to be an atomic weapon, just a very large solid object like a massive astroid is going to mess the planet up. Sort of like the badly made move derived from Starship Trooper.

Nobody has said anything about the kinetic strikes being an atomic weapon. In fact, the original post was specifically making a distinction between atomic strikes and kinetic strikes.[/quote]

With a high enough velocity the result is much the same. In fact with a kinetic weapon, the damage is potentially greater than a nuclear weapon. but the nuclear is useable at a slower range and can irradiate the surrounding area. Six of one and half a dozen of the other depending on what you're using them for.

Not quite true. The original poster was pointing out that there are a few differences between a nuclear strike and a kinetic strike, namely the details of the thermal radiation effects. He was trying to focus on those differences. The difference is not large, but it does exist.

Sorry for my earlier non clear post. A nuke gets a lot of its bang for the buck by emitting gamma radiation ... something a kinetic strike does not do. Thus the reduced heat pulse for a kinetic strike. My bo bo.

I am going to have fun with Dafmeister's cool "blow 'em up" site using high percentage Cee kinetic strikes on some poor helpless planet. Beowolf comes to mind. Just a bunch of high Cee cloaked missile bodies.

Running ballistic. Nothing to see unless there is a lucky radar or laser contact. No emissions at all. Dead dark black bodies. MAYBE a VERY small grav deflector shield to ward off dust strikes. Nothing more.

Out of the polar ecliptic. About .5 Cee. Very well cloaked indeed. Nobody sees them until it is too late. Turn out the lights ... the party is over. No more Beowolf? Yikes! Not nice! HB of CJ (old coot)

So, if I am reading this correctly, for a slightly enhanced effect, the pitcher should actually throw to HIT the bat.

What happens if, at the moment it leaves his shoulder, the BAT magically accelerates to .9c? Wormhole at the impact point?

I hope that everyone on THIS forum of all places realizes that in the Honorverse, the experiment described in Duckk's link could ONLY accomplished with Grayson technology.

Since nukes have been brought up as opposed to KEWs. www.nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap is a nice simulator up to 100 megatons. Ground or airburst with various effects. www.nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/classic allows hypernukes but not tuneable for effects.

Get an object moving fast enough and the difference is academic.
