Grasping at super straws.

Superman is without a doubt the granddaddy of cinematic superheroes. Among his plethora of powers is the ability to fly. But how does he do that?

Consider Superman simply hovering above the city. According to Newton's Second Law, there must be some upward force to balance the downward force of his weight. Expressed mathematically: F – mg = ma = 0. But what could cause that upward force?

One possibility is that he is able to emit high-velocity streams of air through the pores of his skin. As he forces the air out of his body, according to Newton's Third Law, the expelled air must push back. And since Superman can survive in space, his lungs clearly aren't needed for respiration—maybe they're auxiliary air tanks.

Now I'm not one who watches the boob tube with a pad and red-ink pen, marking failing grades from an overabundant collection of [X]. I just don't do that. Not in Weber's Honorverse or in any Verse. Frankly, I don't know how people who do, get to enjoy the read, or the movie. I always give the benefit of the doubt.

When Superman catches Lois Lane, I always assume that the sudden stop doesn't kill her because Superman, being super and gentlemanly, takes care to quickly match vectors (beyond the naked eye) with Miss Lane so's it won't rip the clothes off of her exposing her frillies. Oh, also so's it won't kill her. My brother, when we were growing up "OH COME ON! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!" So I think I learned early on, from watching my brother suffer, not to be so judgmental.

Brother: They'd all flunk physics!
Sisters:  Would you just stop it and enjoy!
Brother: They're superheroes sis, how can they be so dumb?!
Sisters: No ... they're jocks. Grade them on a curve!
Me:

But.

I rang my brother and told him I found a prob too, that I just cannot overlook.

"Oh really. After all the years of non-support? Okay, what is it?"

I'm watching Thor, the new movie see. Remember the first movie when Thor placed his mighty hammer, Mjolnir, on top of his brother Loki, to keep him from getting up? Everyone knows about the qualities of Mjolnir. None can lift that enchanted hammer save for Thor himself. So, while Loki was temporarily knocked out, from a fight with Thor (when the life of beautiful Natalie Portman is involved, people can get knocked out), Thor places the mighty Mjolnir on Loki's chest to keep him pinned to the ground should he regain consciousness. And he does. Right on Hollywood time, Loki awakens. Yet he can't stand up because of the enchanted hammer on his chest.

Cool. The mighty Mjolnir!

But.
Watching the latest movie. I notice Thor is fighting powerful beings. One of the beings punch Thor while he is holding the hammer and knocks him a considerable distance. How can Thor be moved with a punch when he's holding Mjolnir?

Cthia: What do you say brother?
Brother: Your sisters say "Grade on a curve." :D

Revenge is a dish best served ... by brothers.

Cthia:

What red marks [X] or failing grades have you given? Or do you just "grade a jock on a curve?"

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Oh, it's pretty simple. ;) They just need to activate the momentum transfer field portable generator (tm). Admittedly, they didn't exist, at least now, but if you could obtain one from the future, then any impulse outside the field would be retranslated to any point of the field at the speed of light (tm). ;) So, any point inside the field would gain momentum in no time (almost) (tm). And so, even the worst possible acceleration wouldn't inflict any effect; simply, it would be translated to any point of field immediatly and do no harm.

Well, actually it should work good with a few hundreds of "g", as i declare. :D

Simple Superman's internal compensator projects around all things in his grasp, somehow, and allows him to lift, catch or move really spectacular things or just people. The compensator range affects how fast it can encompass the object, likewise the speed of the encompassing limits how fast he can lift things.

Think I have an answer for Mjolnir nitpick. It could be a software/safety feature. Consider; Thor gets epic punch to the chest/head. His grip on Mjolnir doesn't falter. But the rest of him would still be experiencing the g-force of that punch. So either Mjolnir tags along, or Thors arm snaps as he gets punched around the immovable object.

Superman has a pk shell. It's that that allows his great strength with totally insufficient support, his flight, and his ability to catch the falling Lois. (Projecting it towards her and using it to decelarate her rapidy instead pf instantly)

This is from the wikia for a collective superhero fanfic type site. It's one explanation for Superman.

The Six Million Dollar Man had many classics like when his bionic arm was able to lift a car despite being attached to his flesh and blood shoulder.
At a similar vintage the A Team could regularly go head to head with lots of baddies at close range, both lots armed with full auto weapons yet no one ever got shot.

There was a lot of semi porn speculation about Superman's sex life and how Lois survived ejaculation. Reminds me of an old joke.
Superman talking to Batman "While flying past Wonder Woman's mansion the other day I misbehaved and spied on her using my x ray vision. There she was on her bed, naked, on her back obviously enjoying a wild solo fantasy. I couldn't help myself, crashed through the roof and engaged immediately in carnal relations."
"Gee" says Batman, "That must have been a big surprise for her."
"Not as much as it was for the Invisible Man" says Superman.

Larry Niven did a bit on this, 'Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex' that was rather funny and thought provoking. You can find the article in the collection 'N-Space'

Yeah, he happens to look fully human, but he ain't. Can we imagine teck so highly developed that it is practically the same as magic? Wow!

I suppose Superman is super because he is. A life form so highly advanced that he is multi dimensional through time and space and more.

He can do almost anything just by thinking about it. He is the ultimate power source. He can transform his body into energy and back again.

Multi dimensional. He probably hangs around Earth because he wants to and does more good than evil. Plus he seems to like some humans.

His parents sent him here because he could look human and they did not want him to die when their home sun exploded. The rest is ... history.

I recall reading somewhere that Superman has the ability to fly and otherwise defy gravity because he is capable of emitting gravitons (the hypothetical particle which transfers gravitational energy).

The Silver Surfer had some unusual powers as well, but I would imagine that some of that is super science concealed inside the surfboard itself.

In the first Hulk movie, there is a scene where he grabs an M-1 Abrams tank by its cannon barrel, whirls it around and throws it about half a mile.

I don't care how strong he is, he's not heavy enough to do that with a 70 ton tank.

Another common mistake is allowing a character to apply super strength to a very small spot on some ordinary object without tearing it apart. Yanking off a car door is unlikely; you'd probably get just the handle and a bit of sheet metal.

How can the Flash get enough traction to overcome air resistance, or change direction? Why doesn't a shockwave and sonic boom destroy everything within 50 meters of his path?
