Tootall and Isaac Newton,
You both might well be right. I suspect that the blocking force left behind can reach Guanark by Spring, if Wyrshym pulls back. BGV's pushing forward to Lake City would keep a stopper in on the MHoGatA. If it is possible to get there before the spring thaw, denying those supplies to the MHoGatA would be worthwhile. Risky but worthwhile. Doing this requires that Kaitswyrth's army is defeated before Spring and Sumyrs can reinforce. Added: Ooh, I just noticed that Aivynstahn was ~1,000 miles to Lake City. Sumyrs begins at a more Southern latitude and would begin his march north later that BGV and Wyrshym. That suggests to me that he will face less severe winter weather on his trip North, if he does make a move on kaitswyrth in Winter. Me thinks the battle we all would like to see will take place closer to Lake City with Sumyrs and BGV converging on Wyrshym in the open. Either that or Wyrshym stays in Guarnak and BGV and Sumyrs secures their Daivyn and Fairmyn river supply routes. Last edited by PeterZ on Thu Oct 30, 2014 9:36 am, edited 1 time in total.

Hi Guys Just a random thought here. ?? Nynian escaped from Zion with over fifty people fleeing the Inquisition using a regularly scheduled WINTER trip delivering goods to Siddar City. ?? Is it therefore possible for the enemy try sending an armed party using the same route to mount a surprise attack on BGV ?? R . ..//* *\\

kbus888, I'm sure all such roads are well watched to prevent just such flanking moves.

Nynian's route goes through Lake City. Taking that route would mean any meaningful force needs to travel 3,500-4,000 miles overland carrying all their food with them. Nynian's caravan had the advantage of being small enough that the rest stops along the way had enough food laid in to provision her as she traveled. Any large force taking that route wouldn't be able to provision that way. For the GHoGatA it is better to use the canals to bring the troops forward and maneuver into advantageous positions. |

That or Lake Isyk and Lakeside (city). (I'm using the map at http://infodump.thefifthimperium.com/en ... hold/338/1 btw.) There is an "Ice Lake" down near the 'G' in "Glacierheart Province" way down to the Southwest of Baron Green Valley's last known position. FWIW, Going anywhere past Guarnak without taking on the AoG in winter quarters there would be suicidal, IMHO. Going even as far as the city of Five Forks to occupy the canal junctions there, is exceedingly risky if BGV sticks around for springtime there. If I were BGV, I'd destroy or disperse the Church Army encamped at Guarnak and then move south west to liberate Hildermoss province and open the passes back into Old Province and Galcierheart so the ICA and RSA can move in force without fighting for the passes and canals they need to advance come springtime. .
. . Answers! I got lots of answers! (Now if I could just find the right questions.) |

I'd concur with that - merely to add in that once BGV starts the push on Guarnak, Wrysham will have to weaken his forces below Saikynr. We might well see the push up the Sylmahn Gap, as proposed by one of BGV's subordinates - hopefully pincering Wrysham between them. |

I am confused with some of these proposals.
BGV is moving with substantial winter forces toward Guarnak. The church's Army of Sylman is ill prepared for any winter battle. BGV has another army just south of Guarnak with it's own secure supply line, in a standoff with those same Church Forces. When BGV shows up on the flank in great fighting shape and advancing, what can the AoS do? AoS is ill equiped to advance on the flanking forces, ill suppied to fight in the open and tied down in the gap due to the AoC having a substantial Army there. The Grand Inquisitor will not allow any retreat, and will blame everyone for pulling back all those pikemen. Any thought of going farther west just puts Green Valley in the face of the Harchongese contingent. Perhaps just driving the Churches forces out of Guarnak and against the mountains or in the gap away from what pitiful supplies they have will force a surrender. New Northland and Tarikah Provinces have nothing but some internment camps that NEED liberating and the poor folk in those camps are probably dead by now. Securing the northern end of the Gap and Hildermoss provides a Secure Siddermark for now. Last edited by dwileye13 on Thu Oct 30, 2014 12:39 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Lake City is between East Wing Lake and West Wing Lake using the map you referenced. I believe it might also be referred to as Lake View in the books. As for riskiness, did Wyrshym not say that he was sending his dragons back west for the winter? He mentioned something about not having enough cargo capacity through winter because of it. There might well be a goodly number of ice lizards at his disposal. His comments suggest that he would be hard pressed to feed his troops and the refugees through the winter. So, if BGV holds Lake City/Lake View, he has primarily ice lizards come summer and very few dragons. I doubt ice lizards would do well carrying freight in summer. So, the choice is to move North now with ice lizards that are optimized for winter but troops that are not or move in summer with ice lizards that are not optimized and troops that are. In either case Wyrshym MUST move before the RSA's newly formed troops are ready to get a piece of their own back. Wyrshym simply doesn't have the supplies to stay in Guarnak. BGV's greatest risk comes during the journey. If the towns he has to take burn their supplies before he gets their, he will run out of provisions before he reaches Lake City. I suspect that won't happen but is a risk. Mitigating that slightly are the dragoons. The distance from Hyrdmyn to Cat-lizard Lake is approximately what High Mount traveled to flank Ahlvahrez's force in Shiloh. The dragoons can move to secure Cat-lizard Lake right after BGV takes Ohrlahn. The move on Ohrlahn would be a surprise as most would expect BGV to move against Guarnak. The dragoons could make it to Lake City well before Winter ends with the infantry coming along later, just as was done in the Kiplinger. |
