Thanks much. It is fitting that an announcement of a delay in the regular snippet schedule was announced on the 85th Anniversary of Wall Street's "Black Friday."

I wonder: with the steel thistle silk layered with wool, will that significantly slow incoming shrapnel or even bullets? Has anyone figured out that a vest of 6-12 layers of steel thistle silk will stop rifle fire from gunpowder-propelled weapons?
I certainly don't expect the development of ceramic body armor plates anytime soon. And how about layering the inside of a galleon with layers of steel thistle silk to reduce splinters? -- Bob G SF & Fantasy: The only things better than Chocolate.

Are not "safe", "exciting" and "interesting" mutually exclusive? e.g. "may you live in interesting times" Hope the trip delivers everything you want and anticipate. |

Bon voyage! Selamat jalan! Have a safe trip for you and the lovely Sharon, David.
One wonders what will terrify the CoGA more; the ICN battlewagons or the gear that allows the ICA to march through Zion winter weather? Neither can the CoGA produce in sufficient numbers if at all to offset the threat either represents to the jihad. Seriously, a harchongese sees the profligacy with which the Charisian uses steel thistle silk and his mind has to boggle. If the Charisians can produce the prohibitively expensive fabric in such quantities, what else can they turn upside down? What other miracle can they generate? Soldiers that know of people working with steel thistle silk will see lives saved in reducing the labor requirements for the process. IIRC, separating the seeds from the fiber exposed the worker to sepsis. How many such insights need to be made before the value provided by the Charisian production systems become inescapable? How many of Nynian's poor might be clothed and housed better? How much more food might be produced to feed Safehold's hungry with abundant Charisian tools? Does God so hate mankind that He proscribes these things that will make humanity's lot better or does He love man enough to allow these innovations? Those types of questions will wreak havoc with the Inquisitions grip on Safehold's citizenry. |

I've dressed like that - and towed a damned toboggan with a tent on it too! While wearing snow shoes as well. 40 below and coats open. But they didn't give us floors for our tents.
Thanks RFC for reminding me how much fun winter exercises were (ok, not) ![]() Do remember that you can literally freeze your ass off if you are not careful! --

No hats? no double walled steel thermoses? with coffee? i assume simple over site, and they do have some form of WARM head protection, unlike the germans vs the russians. also what about repeated firing of the guns in COLD weather? or starting the oil stove? unless otherwise noted i will assume Greenvalley paid attention to the russian/german winter conflicts in his history books. laz Ps have fun in europe |

Thank you RFC!
Fascinating details of winter equipment. With 2 dragoon brigades, and an infantry division with supporting artillery and engineers, would seem to total ~40,000 winter sets of uniforms, tents, etc and well within Charis's capabilities, while probably providing the same for the whole army couldn't be. I wonder if the Raven Lords know about them? ![]() How soon until we have a battle or engagement? L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

And best of all, Green Valley thought, no one on the other side has a clue of just how winter-mobile we are. I can't wait to read Clyntahn's response to the results of Safehold's first northern winter major battle. ~Tonto |
