This quote is a bit unclear.

"She stepped forward and reminded herself to salute the Grayson planetary flag on the boat bay's forward bulkhead before facing the side party. That, too, was something to remember, but at least the GSN had agreed to let it's borrowed Manticoran personnel retain the RMN salute they were used to."

Since the Manticoran salute is for all intents and purposes identical to the modern American air force salute, how might Grayson personnel differ, setting as their uniforms and traditions are taken from the Americans as well?

I remember that quote, but didn't really think about it.

There are at least 4 types of salutes I can think of quickly here on Earth, but which (if any) of them the Grayson's use I'm not sure. (And HoS appears silent on this aspect of their military).

(And I'm just listing prominent examples for who uses these salutes)
Boy Scouts; three fingered salute (thumb and pink in the "ok" symbol), palm down, edge of hand facing out.
US salute; palm facing down, edge of the hand pointing out.
Royal Navy salute; palm facing inwards
Royal Army salute; palm facing outwards

Wikipedia has a whole article on that with many many examples that I hadn't known; for example the Polish salute is a two fingered salute; palm out. (It also includes variations of not just what the salute looks like when held, but the motion of raising the hand to the face)

One interesting bit I noticed from there was that prior to 1917 the Royal Army required you to salute with whichever hand was furthest from the person being saluted.

Bold mine.

The U.S. Air Force salute, at least when I learned it 30 years ago, was:

Palm facing toward yourself, middle finger at the edge of your right eye, edge of glasses if wearing them, or edge of hat brim if wearing one. Thumb alongside the rest of the hand.

Like this: http://www.jble.af.mil/shared/media/pho ... 50-004.jpg

Although judging by other images while searching for the above image, it looks like it may have changed since then. It also looks like the thumb isn't the same as when I was taught.

It's the reason I laugh every time I see a salute, especially Air Force salutes, in movies or TV, because invariably, they use the type of salute that looks like one is shading their eyes from the sun while looking off in the distance.

This is how I was taught to salute in the Navy twenty years ago. Palm slanted down from the eye brow, with the middle finger at the eye brow, hand tilted slightly toward the body. Elbow bent at a 45 degree angle and arm at a 90 degree angle from the body.

There are numerous reasons and ways for how the many countries render honors. Salutes included. As listed previously. I'd imagine the Grayson salute recognizes fealty and religion.

Not sure this is a suitable first post, being a nitpick, but the British Army doesn't take the Royal prefix; this is because it is officially answerable to Parliament, not the Crown. That is how they salute though.

Well hopefully they don't salute like Arnold J. Rimmer in the TV show Red Dwarf.

As far as I know, that is the standard for the entire DoD.

Since Graysons emigrated from the US, mostly from Utah, I'd suggest that their saluting practice would conform to their place of origin -- i.e. the US. Given the possible connection with The Latter Day Saints (Mormons) there may be an older influence (Roman?) in saluting form, but given the 21st century time frame, I'd bet on modern US DoD as the main influence.

I'm confused. In what notional way does the modern United States Air Force salute differ from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard salute? As far as I am aware, they are identical in their ideal form, differing only in the individual precision of execution.

In attempting to respond to my confusion, please note that I have 12 years in the US Army, much of it in Joint environments, and an additional 26 years in the DoD. I cannot claim to have read the detailed saluting regs of all services, however.
