Is there a list with the Safehold names and their Terran origin
Some are selfexplaining but some I simply can't figure out example: Zhan = Sean or Jean Zhanayt = Jeanette |

I haven't seen a list, but I haven't really had any problems in working out the original names and usually read them as the original rather than try to have any strange pronunciation going on in my head. Well, maybe there are one or two, where the original must have been quite 'foreign' for an English speaker - take Nimue2's surname for example - You need Welsh phonetics to work out how that's supposed to be pronounced. If there are some you are particularly puzzled by, post them, and I am sure someone will help. It's probably not good linguistics, but I usually read Zhan = John and Zhanayt = Janet. Equivalencies partly depend on which language you think the names started in. |

I once found an article on the subject while looking for something else (http://www.springhole.net/writing/namesofthefuture.htm). Admittedly, in Safehold circumstances most of it may not be very helpful, but that's still something.
There's also the term known as "language economics" (roughly tanslating), meaning that people will try to shorten word, phrase or name to make it faster to write or say. Can't really say that happened on Safehold either... I generally just try to find Terran equivalent, like Randomiser, although sometimes I try reading it Safeholdian when I have no idea (Rainos still escapes me, for example). -----------

One interesting name is Nahrmahn Baytz. The English equivalent of the name is Norman Bates who is the main character in the novel and film Psycho.

I think that Horseman (or however it gets spelt on Safehold) is an attempt to rehabilitate the Houseman name from Honour of the Queen (and later novels).

I've found a few in the first 3 books. No attempts to replicate the tortuous Safehold spelling here.
