I can't quite decide if I should be proud or embarrassed to bring up this topic...
In a dual effort (i.e.: "two-birds-with-one-stone") to get my kids more computer literate {something other than "Daniel Tiger" web site(s)} _AND_ to get them more interested in the S.T.E.M. areas of study (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), I thought HEY, let's install the "LEGO Digital Designer" software on our computers! FFI, see URL: "http://ldd.lego.com/en-us/" Well, I've done said install on at least one of our computers, and I expect to do so on several others (perhaps all) of our computers (that they have their own logins available on). So... "Lo and Behold", I checked the forums.davidweber.net to see if anything new was going on, and FLASH! A dangerous potentially time-sucking idea occurred: * Scaled (or not scaled) Lego designs for the Honorverse ships. Hmmm... QUESTIONs: Has ANYONE (other than MAYBE "The Sellers Family in Davidson, NC") done this, or done ANY investigation to find out how practical it would be to do such a project? i.e.: * What would some practical scales be? and/or * Is the LDD software even CAPABLE of doing some very large designs? ERR . =====

I think I remember reading about someone who built replicas of the starships in Minecraft...
~~~~~~
I can't write anywhere near as well as Weber But I try nonetheless, And even do my own artwork. (Now on Twitter)and mentioned by RFC! ACNH Dreams at DA-6594-0940-7995 |
The more I think about it, the more schizophrenic my attitude becomes.
(1) What LITTLE I have tinkered with the software makes me think that it's just not set up for a very large project. I could be wrong. (Does anyone know?) (2) But, it seems like an intriguing idea. (3) But then again, it sounds like this is a BIG SUCKING SOUND, in that it has the potential to gobble up large quantities of TIME. Someone please que the Worf sound effect: Arrrrrg! . =====
My question would be how far do you want to go? Do you want to mock up a DD/CL that is 8-12 inches long? or Do you want to do what was done on Minecraft and design something close to full scale? And then the next question is do you plan on just an electronic representation or actually build them? Lego can get very detailed, but you sometimes need to build very large scales to do so. And actually building at those scales is hideously expensive. If you havn't already, go to the Brothers Brick website and see some of the amazing (and expensize) creations there. A few yeras back, a Doctor posted pictures of a reconstruction of the Ohio State University Hourseshoe stadium - If I remember corrrectly it was several years in the making and >$30,000 in bricks. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |
I remember reading that when making the LEGO movie all the actual lego construct things where designed in this software, but i also imagine they had vastly more computing power to run it.
