Two of the best classes I ever took were touch typing one and two and speed reading one and two. Both actually taken in high school from 1964 to 1967, We learned touch typing on manual Underwood typewriters ... with blank keys.

You know ... the big heavy Clark Kent type typewriters using old fashioned inked ribbons. One key at a time. Nearly 50 years later it still serves me well. Who would have thunked it? Also easy to read slow for just enjoyment.

I will have to check them out, 25 book would keep me busy for a minute.

A list is kept of titles that look interesting but not locally available. This is turned over to the librarian about monthly. The net has been helping also.

Sometimes things turn up that are interesting in unexpected ways and slow me down, such as:

Jung, M. et al. 1992. First observation of bound-state β- decay. Physical Review Letters. 69 (15): 2164–2167.

or:

M. Ozima, S. Zashu, Y. Takigami and G. Turner, "Origin of the Anomalous 40Ar-36Ar Age of Zaire Cubic Diamonds: Excess 40Ar in Pristine Mantle Fluids," Nature, 337 (1989): pp. 226-229.

For some reason, speed reading doesn't help much with things on that level :P

I'm somewhat of a contrarian: my preference is to locate weak spots in any paradigm. There are many more of them than most people expect are possible.

Those would defiantly slow me down.

Someone mentioned Elizabeth Moon as a SF-author, she writes great fantasy too. I do recommend anyone to read the Paksenarrion and it's associated series.

Anne McCaffrey, The Ship Who Sang and Planet Pirates series + Ireta. And then there is the Pern series.

Sharon Lee & Steve Miller, Liaden Universe series. The books chronological order is in a bit of a mess.

James S. A. Corey, The Expanse series

Mike Shepherd, Kris Longknife series and it's prequels and spinoffs.

I quite enjoy the Chicago Sentinels series by Marion G Harmon. The series is an interesting take on the superhero mythos exploring the areas of superheroics that other books ignore such as the need for good costume design, recruiting former vigilantes (even if they're dead... it makes sense, trust me), the need for court orders before trying to capture known supervillains and all sorts of other things that the comics gloss over.
Most of it is seen from the viewpoint of newest member of the titular superhero group who is still adjusting to her newfound powers and the changes to her life that the powers bring.

And it's a good read.

In order, the books are :-
Wearing The Cape
Villains Inc
Bite Me: Big Easy Nights*
Omega Night (Short story)
Young Sentinels
Small Town Heroes
*Follows secondary character in New Orleans

If you need an overview the TVTropes page on it is just here (beware of spoilers).

Another series you might like would be the Vorkosigan series, by Lois Mcmaster-Bujold. Space opera, but you find yourself drawn into the characters and action. 'Shards of Honor' is the first one.

Here is more. The first is the Horatio Hornblower series by C.S. Forester. At least 14 novels. The second is the Jack Aubrey series by Patrick Obrian. At least 20 books plus the one final non finished portion. Both same basic time era. This should keep you busy for awhile. See what happens when we read for knowledge and recreation and do not watch TV? HB of CJ (old coot) Cm. :) :)

Not scince fiction at all, but you might like W.E.B. Griffin's "Brotherhood of War" or "the Corp" series.

Lesser know navel authors I have enjoyed are C. North vote Parkinson's, Richard Woodman, Robert N. Macomber and Julian Stockwin.
