Admiral Chakrabarti? He wss First Space Lord under Janacek and unlike Jurgenson, he had the moral courage to disagree with Janacek and resign when Janacek gave orders that Chakrabarti knew would harm the kingdom.

I've noticed there are three kinds of protagonists in David's writing. There is the good guy that's always been good (Example Honor), the bad guy whose always been bad (High Ridge) and the guy who starts bad then goes good (Klaus Hauptman). Now I'm basically talking about the Manticorians and I also acknowledge that the bad guys turning good may not turn all the way to the light but with that being said I'd put Chakrabarti in the third category.

The question then becomes did Chakrabarti resign just as First Space Lord or resign from the service and if the former, what happened to him during the battle of Manticore.

BTW - Long time lurker - first actual post

If he resigned also from the service and sat out the Battle of Manticore he may or may not be recalled back to active duty depending on how disperate the navy is. Just a thought and I too wondered what became of him.

If the wiki is correct, Chakrabarti's last non-staff posting was as an XO, so he's never even commanded a ship, let alone a squadron. I don't think the White Haven Admiralty is that desperate for flag officers.

First of all, ghost, have an Old Tillman on me for your first post.

While the MWW has done a fair share of Heel-Face turns (see TV tropes if you don't get it), I can't see Chakrabarti getting a major role in the Military campaigns ahead. As mentioned above, he seems to have been mostly a bureaucratic Admiral rather than a Ship-borne one, and despite his resignation on principal, he is still a member of the Opposition and is presumably opposed to many of the actions of the Alexander Administration.

I see him as a "talking head" on the more erudite news programs (not the Star Kingdom Today) defending the Conservative position. He may even one day become leader of a new (and hopefully not as backward-thinking) Conservative party.

IMHO as always. YMMV.

My "whatever happened to" is Sally McBride. Haven't really seen much of her in the past several books, IIRC.

And while, thanks to HoS, we know where Iris Babcock (Harkness) is (....Babcock is currently command sergeant major at Saganami Island, the Royal Manticoran Naval Academy.), I can't imagine her staying there when the SEM is in for the fight of it's life...besides, Susan Hibson is on her way (again, per HoS) to the Talbott Sector and she could use a good Chief Noncom....

Ditto.

And speaking of the Marines, what's Tomas Ramirez up to these days?

Welcome to the forum mate. I mean Mike. Have a couple brewskies on me too.

Regarding Klaus Hauptman. Is it common consensus that he is now considered a good guy? I feel he is too, but textev states that he and Honor, as far as she is concerned, will never be ... favorites. Even after she acknowledged something akin to, paraphrasing, "at least when Klaus decides he likes you he goes all out in your corner." Or something similar.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

last sighting was n House of Steel:

In 1920, Major General Ramirez was assigned as chief of staff to the Commandant of the Corps.

Like Honor, he's got too much rank to be leading units or terrorizing murderers (Summervale). Still, it would be nice to see him again.

cthia, good question. Klaus, simply due to his nature, will probably never be a 'nice guy'. But he is a man who clearly understands responsiblity, honors his commitments, and loves his daughter. Like another complex character (John Chandler Simpson of the "Ring of Fire" series), he may never be beloved, but he is one to be respected.

And I think we all know people like that.
