The problem is the human factor. Since it is decentralized, they have to choose to do it and most feel their time is better spent elsewhere. Due to all the compliance burdens and lawsuit prevention, they are now spending 1/4 of their time on paperwork. I suppose they feel this is just one more thing taking time away from face to face time with patients.

And it's not just deaths, some of the really interesting data coming out of Europe is on co-morbidities (diseases that occur together in the same patient). It is providing some really interesting research hypothesis around disease relationships: Disease 1 causes/increases the risk of disease 2, disease 1 and disease 2 have the same underlying cause/risk (obesity for example). Some of those relationships have been known for years, other have been surprises. Big data has been very useful in this respect. For example People with Disease 1 have a 10x greater chance of disease 2 than a matched control group. That matched control group is really key, a lot of wild goose chases have been started by the use of poor control groups and the big data in the European databases when used properly allows excellent matching.

It's frustrating,, though I do understand the frustrations of inane paperwork nonsense. I guess I just do not think this is nonsense. Well, my opinion is not being consulted.

what you're reporting about co factors is very interesting. One that came to mind instantly was HIV and Kaposi's Sarcoma, one of it's most common opportunistic infections, IIRC. Hope I spelled it correctly. :D

A healthcare worker in Dallas has tested positive for Ebola and is now in isolation. She was self-monitoring and came in soon as she showed a fever. The scary bit is she was using full protection while caring for the gentleman who died of Ebola there in Dallas.

Obviously, she is not the first healthcare worker to get Ebola. What they do not want to talk about is how persons, like various doctors who have gotten it and recovered - or died of it - have gotten infected despite taking the recommended precautions. Or how the NBC cameraman got it, Surely he was not touching Ebola victims. It is not running wild, otherwise there would be far more cases than there are, but it isn't as easily controlled as they want to think either. Stay tuned. And pray for this lady in Dallas. It takes guts and commitment to care for someone lethally contagious.

Although informative, it is appalling and a bit disconcerting that many sites, regarding Ebola, are beginning to task airplanes as "aluminum petri dishes."

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Since the beginning of the outbreak, I had discussed with friends the possibility of US military intervention.

U.S. to Commit Up to 3,000 Troops to Fight Ebola in Africa.

I wish it had occurred sooner.

What I'd like to see even more is a couple of dozen container ships filled with rubber gloves etc etc.

What an idiot, you can't scream fire in a crowded theater. And you shouldn't scream "I have ebola," anywhere. If you don't.

Other reports state that he had been excessively coughing beforehand. Therefore, passengers were already primed to believe his idiotic claim.

Something I am finding troubling is the large difference between the protocols used for people going in and out of level 4 biohazard areas at the CDC and USAMRIID at Ft Derrick and what is advised for healthworkers both here and in Africa.

See The Hot Zone for a detailed description of what's done routinely in a true level 4 research facility. They wear full biohazard suits with HEPA filtered air supply. They shower in decontaminating fluids going in and coming out. They are not allowed to wear their street clothes in under their suit. It is naked in and naked out and showers all around both bleach and regular before and after both naked and wearing the suit after. It does not get touched until it has been showered thoroughly in bleach water for several minutes.

This last is NOT done by healthcare workers -nor is any of the rest, they appear to be dressing out of my personal box of handle a dead body stuff. Really? - and IMO this amateur hour stuff may likely be the source of healthworker infections. I do not even see somebody standing there with a spray bottle of bleach soaking them down before disrobing. I would sure be spraying a lot of bleach water if we had to do contaminated with nasty bug stuff. I mean... Really, people? Appears to be happening in ordinary rooms, not even a surgical type clean up place or even a shower stall. ???!!!???

edited by the spelling typo queen to fix one.
