A rundown on exactly what war-fighting technology (minus ships since HoS did that so well already) the RMN has used and is currently using. I wanted to provide a listing for those confused by all of the names and numbers flying around and to neatly collate everything in one spot. I focused on Manticoran tech because we are given the most information on their goodies.

I'm going to break the armament down into sections to make it more readable. Here we go.
Attack Missiles Single-Drive (early range: 6-7 million km; ERMs: 12-17 million km?) 1) Mark 13 a. Before and during First Havenite War b. BC and CA mainly c. Specs i. Mass: 78 tons (IFF) ii. Max Accel: 88,000 g iii. Warhead: 15 megatons 2) Mark 50 a. Early DD/CL missile (outdone by later missile advances i.e. Mk-34) b. Courageous-class (HMS Fearless) c. Mass: 78 tons 3) Mark 34 a. Before and during First Havenite War b. CL and DD 4) Mark 38 a. BC/CA variant b. First Havenite War 5) Mark 27 a. DN/SD variant b. First Havenite War c. Mod C version aboard HMAMC Wayfarer 6) Mark-14 (Extended Range Missile [ERM]) a. Developed between the First and Second Havenite War for combatants below the wall b. Range: 17.9 million km (ToF) 7) Mark 17 E a. Erewhonese variant based on the RMN Mk 14 (is there an RMN Mk 17 or are they basically equivalent?) 8) Mark 19 a. Capital ship missile (SD and DN) b. Mass: 130 tons 9) Mark 36 Lightweight ERM (LERM) a. Carried by Avalon-class CL & Wolfhound-class DDs 10) Mark 9 “Viper” a. Dogfighting LAC missile used primarily by GSN Katanas b. Based off of the Mk 31 CM Comments: These are all of the single-drive missiles I was able to locate reading through the novels, forum posts, Pearls, anthologies, HoS, and Jayne’s Guide. I was unable to find many specifications for them. If anyone has more information on them feel free to add it. For example, I was unable to definitively confirm the range of the ERM. Torch of Freedom implies that the Mk-14’s range (and maybe the Mk-36) are at almost a light minute (~18 million km) so that is the number that I used. I also included the Viper missile here because it is technically single-stage even if it is based off of the Mk-31 countermissile (and I didn’t really have anywhere else to put it ) And the post won't let me keep the outline formatting I had. Sorry about that. I had it all much neater. *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

Next section.
Multi-Drive 1) Mk 41 Very Long Range Missile (VLR) a. First iteration of the MDM b. First deployed on Minotaur-class LAC carrier 2) Mark-16 (Dual-drive Missile, [DDM]) a. Able to be fired via internal tubes by ships below the wall down to DDs b. Specifications i. Range at rest: 29,000,000 km ii. Max powered range (without ballistic phase): 42,000,000 km? iii. Mass: 94 tons c. Variants i. E: 15 megaton warhead ii. E-1: Improved gravity lensing with existing Mod E warhead(doubles effectiveness); formerly designated the Mod-F iii. G: 40 megaton warhead; as powerful as a RMN capital ship warhead ca. 1915 PD (coupled with improved lensing increases throughput by a factor of five) 3) Mark-23 (Triple Stage Missile, [MDM]) a. Deployed internally only by podnaughts and via exterior pods on ships below the wall b. Specifications i. Range at rest: 63,000,000 km ii. Max powered range: 86,000,000 km? iii. Max accel: 96,000 g iv. Terminal velocity: 0.83 c c. Variants i. E (Echo) : Apollo Control Missile (ACM) ii. F: ACM for use with the Mk-25 system defense missile 4) Mark-25 (previously Mk-23 D) a. Four-stage system defense variant (when do we get to see this?) Comments: The meat and potatoes of the Manticoran Missile Massacre in conjunction with the podnaught. The multi-drive missiles necessarily have more information available in the novels. If any of the numbers are incorrect, again, feel free to put the right ones in. Areas marked with a “?” are pretty self-explanatory and represent more uncertain numbers or stats (especially the maximum powered range figures). Specifically, I think that the mass of the Mk-23 is given and the terminal velocity of the Mk-16 is also and perhaps I just missed it. If anyone has those numbers, please comment. To reiterate: I want to see this four-stage missile. Imagine the range it must have! However, I was confused by the terminology for it. Its ACM is only going to be a 3-stage Mk-23 variant? It won’t have the range to hang with the actual ASMs (anti-ship missiles) if that’s true. *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

Countermissiles
1) Mark 21 a. First Havenite War 2) Mark-30 3) Mark-31 a. Specifications i. Max Accel: 130,000 g ii. Range: 3.6 million km; actual: 3,585,556 km (AAC) b. Miscellaneous i. SD(P) CM launcher: Mod-2-XR with cycle time of 8 s Comments: Not much here. I wasn’t able to find any numbers for the Mk-21 or the Mk-30 (My search was as exhaustive as I could make it but I don’t discount that I may have missed things). Again, the Mk-31, being the most modern CM, has more hard data available (and I threw in the launcher for some reason even though I didn’t do that with actual attack missiles; if anyone wants to put information on the launchers for the shipkillers be my guest!) *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

Remote Arrays
1) Mark-20 (Keyhole-I) a. Tractored fire-control telemetry relays that allow the firing ship to look "past" the interference of their impeller wedge and provide 360° sensor coverage b. Standard light-speed telemetry c. Limited anti-missile capability 2) Keyhole-II (Mark 2 platform) a. Same premise as Keyhole I but uses FTL telemetry b. Only ships equipped with this platform can use the complete Apollo fire-control system c. Upgraded anti-missile capability 3) Ghost Rider recon drone (RD) a. FTL-equipped with standard light-speed secondary system b. Highly stealthy c. Specifications i. Acceleration 1. Stealth mode: 5000 g ii. Endurance 1. Powered-down passive mode: ≥ 23 days d. Mistletoe i. Armed recon drone (standard nukes) ii. Mainly designed to take out stationary system defense relays (i.e. Havenite "Moriarty" system) 4) Hermes buoy a. Communications platform equipped with FTL grav- pulse and standard light-speed lasers Comments: The remote drones/array section. I didn’t include many hard numbers here mostly because that information is lacking. Is there a make/model number for Keyhole-II? I’ve only ever seen it referred to as the Mark 2 platform. Additionally, any more information on the Ghost Rider RDs would be helpful. I wasn’t able to find anything concrete on their maximum acceleration or endurance. *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

Missile Pods
1) Mark-10 a. HMAMC Wayfarer b. Early Medusas (carried 564) 2) Mark-11 a. Buttercup-era Medusas (carried 500) 3) Mark-15 (SfTS) 4) Mark-17 “Flatpack” pod a. Compressed pod that allows for more pods to fit in a given area and volume b. Medusa-class SD(P) can carry 800 c. Invictus-class SD(P) can carry 1074 Comments: The missile pod information was largely gleaned from HoS and snippets here and there in the books. I didn’t include dimensions just the more relevant information on which ship types deployed them and how many they could carry. I wasn’t able to find anything more on the Mark-15 pods aside from a line mentioning them in Storm from the Shadows. *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

And lastly we have the EW birds.
Electronic Warfare Platforms 1) Dragon’s Teeth (Project Ghost Rider) a. Highly effective decoys that mimic entire swarms of missiles to produce false targets 2) Dazzlers (Project Ghost Rider) a. Extremely powerful jammers that disrupt defensive sensor coverage Comments: Lastly, the EW missiles. These, as far as I can tell, don’t have make/model names that we’ve been informed of. There are no numbers on them either but it’s only important to know what they do to make the enemy’s life hell *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

Quite a bit of the above can be found in this wiki with a little searching although certain pages still need a bit of editing.

I did consult the Honorverse wiki but found it pretty lacking in both extent and information on these topics. Some of the information on there was wrong as well (i.e it had the Mk-16 listed twice, once in the single-drive section and once in the multiple drive one). In addition its lists of missiles, pods, countermissiles, and recon drones/remote arrays is not that comprehensive. *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

Someday I will have to get the Jayne's References. I have seen the Mk50 mentioned as the Courageous/Noblesse class' missile launcher; it was built 50 years before the first laserheads. The laserhead in OBS that broke McBride's hip was 70 tons, and the mass of the contact nukes was never given. there are no references to the Mk34 or the Mk38 in the text of the books. Are they somewhere else? There is also no indication in the text of the books that the laserheads used by Fearless at OBS were the same as any others-- during the Fleet exercise, the laserheads used were 75 tons--smaller than the Mk 13, larger than Fearless'.( Also, likely subject to later revision). The only nomenclature I know of that was used for pre-war missiles aside from the the Mk-13 was the initial capital-ship laserhead (Mk-19) and its longer-ranged successor the Mk27C (from Wayfarer's pods). The later missile was 120 tons, but I don't think the range was ever given in text. There isn't any data on either size or range for the Mk 19, except that its power and range would both be unpleasant surprises for the People's Navy (as of 1883, in HoS)-, because the PN was using the off-the-shelf missiles exported from the League. Aside from the Mk50 launchers, we are told the launchers in the Star Knights are Mod 7s, and when HH got an introduction to the Courvosier class, they had the RMN's Mod 19 launchers. No data on missiles, ranges, etc. The launchers on the Saganami B was only given as "second generation;" while the Saganami-C and Roland used variants of a Mod 9. So were the Bravo's using Mod 8? Who knows isn't saying. |
