Thinking about this referendum. I think it may be a good thing it happened in the long run. Now the Scots OWN the decision and they have proof it was their own choice. They can't say we were forced in anymore. Now that they have made this choice they have the responsibility to do their part in making the UK work.

T'would be nice, but we have a very vocal 1.6 million Yes voters who say they're in the UK against their will.... One very interesting thing about the referendum is that the areas that did vote Yes have very high levels of social deprivation and unemployment. Mike. ---------------------

And given what would have happened if Scotland had gone independent, those areas would have almost certainly found themselves with even higher levels of social deprivation and unemployment. Heck, the Royal Bank of Scotland was planning on moving south of the border if Scotland went its own way. That should tell you something... ~~~~~~

RBS is still technically a private company as is Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale, so regardless of any threats from Salmond they could relocate if they so chose. The catch being that it would have been Edinburgh that would have been hit hardest with all those firms heading south. Not something a Glaswegian would shed any tears over as those two cities only tolerate each other at best. You'll note that Glasgow voted yes. As a general rule, Glasgow and Edinburgh don't like each other. Dundee and Aberdeen don't like each other and both dislike Glasgow and Edinburgh. Aberdeen has a chip on it's shoulder as it generates approximately 25% of Scotland's GDP and doesn't get any real thanks for it. Inverness is up on it's own and Stornaway, Kirkwall and Lerwick don't like being dictated to by Edinburgh. Herding cats springs to mind. We Scots are just a bit fractious y'know... Sadly. that sketch is representative of what happened in the UK with the left-wing parties. The British general election of 1979 was contested by the Labour Party, the Social Democratic and Labour Party, the Independent Labour Party, the Communist Party of Britain, the Scottish Labour Party, the Workers' Revolutionary Party, the Independent Social Democratic and Labour Party, the Workers' Party, the Northern Ireland Labour Party, the Democratic Labour Party, the Socialist Unity Party, the Independent Socialist Party, the Workers Party (Leninist), the Social Democratic Party and the Socialist Party of Great Britain. Not that there weren't some important policy differences between different leftist groups, but even so... The winner, incidentally, of that particular election was none other than... the Conservative Party. ~~~~~~

Ah Monty Python at it's best! Good analogy for the Scottish Socialist Party, Labour, the Greens and the SNP trying to out left each other.
Well, it's going to be interesting to see what happens to the SNP vote in the North. If they lurch too far to the left under Sturgeon in order to keep votes in the central belt, they may shed others elsewhere. It's possible that the Scottish Conservatives could make some headway in both the Borders and the North, in Holyrood if not at Westminster. The Lib-Dums are currently regarded as dead meat everywhere except Orkney and Shetland. There is an outside chance that the Inverness and Nairn constituency could drop a UKIP MSP into the mix. Now that would be interesting! Although I may not give the impression, I will admit I'm that rarest of breeds - a Scottish Tory. My main frustration is that the party here isn't doing what it really needs to do - split completely from the Westminster party and go it's own way. In order for it to survive it needs to develop it's own unique voice in the same way as the old Unionist Party had. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unionist_Party_%28Scotland%29 I'm fed up effectively wasting my vote! Some of the latest in Scottish politics....
The Weegie housewife's resigned: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/scottish-labour-leader-johann-lamont-to-step-down-9817346.html BBC Scotland's Political Editor Brian Taylor gives his analysis: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-29770169 Alex Salmond may reappear at Westminster: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-29750610 Scotland's Middle class may be in some denial that it is Middle class: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-29673044 It appears that Labour is in meltdown both north and south of the border, if it's not the SNP up here, it's UKIP in England: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/former-labour-minister-frank-field-hits-out-at-ed-miliband-for-being-soft-on-immigration-9809122.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-29696467 There has also been some rumblings about a "Yes Alliance" to try and unseat as many Scottish Labour MP's as possible at next years General Election. They'd better be careful what they wish for, they might accidentally hand a few seats to the Conservatives..... Mike. ---------------------
