That would be a fun division to set up. Theisman will likely feel very awkward as Yu's superior, but Yu would likely take it in stride and Cachat would be ok with it. It would be fun having staff meetings where Theisman is proposing tactics and when another officer questions the decision, Yu backs the logic because he drilled it into Theisman in the first place.

It was said in A Rising Thunder that the intergration of the two fleets was "no picnic" but we didnt see any troubles in the story. This is particularly due to both sides top brass rather liking each other and hitting it off more or less perfectly from day one, but it cant have been that smooth all over.

Having a short story in some future anthology where two new characters from both sides try and work together and have to overcome their old grudges would make an great addition to the story I think.

MOLLY DeLANEY AND ALLEN HIGGINS.

Molly, as we all know, is not precisely fond of Manties. She'll work with them, but how would that fall out if she was actually on the bridge with one (or several) instead of Chief of Staff of a purely Havenite fleet which was acting in concert with the GSN and RMN?

And Allen. Oh, my baby Allen. Intellectually, I'm sure he's come to terms with the Grand Alliance. Intellectually, I'm sure he even approves of it.

But his gut reaction to working on the same bridge with the people responsible for Grendelsbane?

Oh, yes. This has some very interesting possibilities, and for once, they're not romantic!

I'm back from a vacation. Everyone is assuming that Honor is now out of the picture. But she is the only officer that has the respect of every member of the Grand Alliance! And even the Sollies have heard of the Salamander. Some of their high command may scoff at her achievements but I'm sure that most of their field command now know of her.

So, this is my take on things: Honor is CIC of the Grand Fleet which both takes on the Malign because Anton and Cachet discover where they are and puts a stop to the League's depravities. Every single one of our heros are involved in these grand epic non-battles. Non-battles because as soon as her image shows up on an enemy's screen, sanity dictates surrender.

If RFC will follow my lead, this epic journey might just be completed in my life-time!!

I would be interested in seeing Warner Caslet (with a squadron from the Protector's Own) teamed up with Oliver Diamanto.

Both raised and served under the PN / CPS; the interaction and comparing personal notes and lessons would be fascinating.

I can see that day going down in Grayson history as 'The Purging Of The Keys'.

No well run military service (and this includes any protagonist side navy in any Weber universe) "grooms x for flag rank from graduation."

It is a persistent, pernicious myth.

This was not even true in the most purchase-driven, patronage rife days of the Royal Navy. (There is perhaps slightly more reason to accuse the British Army of the Iron Duke's era of some of this - Lord Cardigan got in there somehow.)

Grooming for high rank most certainly DOES occur, in almost every service. Indeed, it is generally viewed, or even codified as a DUTY of senior officers, for the sake of the future of their service.

But it does not occur before the younger officer in question has shown multiple aspects of ability. Otherwise it is a waste, or a crapshoot, or worst of all a net negative for the service, and senior officers KNOW THAT!

The earliest it is reasonable to begin seeing someone "groomed" is near the end of their first command, what ever level that occurs at in their particular service/environment. In my particular service, the US Army, perhaps about the time an officer reached O-4.

In looking at officers with LESS experience than that, the evaluation motivation leans more to correcting the fixable flaws of young officers, giving OPPORTUNITIES to show their mettle, and winnowing out those who just aren't cut out for the service.

Now I recognize that this is just one ex-officer's opinion, reinforced by the guidance of my seniors over the years on how THEY looked on their part in subordinates career development.

I would be very interested to see comment from other current and former military fans on how they perceive this mentoring and development process works.

...But a really, really interesting book! I'm envisioning some high-potential Shell world, on the far side of the fracturing SL, that becomes Victor's latest project...and he decides it really, really NEEDS a navy...quick!

...of course, the plan may change tomorrow.
