Agreed, they won't like it...

But the question is, what can they really do about it?

Ummm...not very much, not much at all...except froth at the mouth.

Hi Don,

Yup, if the inquisitors are outnumbered by 50,000 or 100,000 to 1, without any back up possible from Zion, and little to none likely to make it through the ICN which is now going to be permanently based in the Gulf of Dohlar [Will changing the name be part of Dohlar's punishment?] I suspect any surviving ones to tread far more lightly than Clyntahn would want.

I suspect many would rely on their relation$hip$ with the local aristocrat$, but the corruption may only accelerate things eroding from under them all.

The extreme reaction will work so long as hate<fear. Once that changes, being an Inquisitor could get very lonely. OTOH, the Church still has the loyalty of the common people, and the most effective means to mobilize them. If Clyntahn suspects a ruler of flirting with defecting he wouldn't hesitate to respond, even if just means that the country dissolves into anarchy. It would still be an object lesson to the other leaders.

Any plan to defect from the jihad will have to maintain very tight security while subverting non-Inquisition parts of the Church. A heck of a conundrum.

With the reduced ability of the inquisition to act is howard, then merlin could really stir the situation, making it more likely in howard at least the church power is broken or fragmented.

Hi SYED,

Quite right.

Fragmenting the CoGA has certainly always been a key part of Merlin's plan, to make it increasingly irrelevant to most Safeholders.

I suspect Merlin may be a bit too busy to get involved in Howard's drift from the CoGA until after the war on Haven is resolved, and the ICN blockade of Howard sinks in to the population's consciousness, so they begin to understand the increased limits on the CoGA's power.

Because the CoC isn't interested in becoming a world wide church since it doesn't have to be,t encouraging local reformers to go their own way also demonstrates their tolerance, which may become a growing desire across Safehold, especially after the war, that the temple will have to accommodate itself to, regardless of who controls it.

Anybody up for unpleasant thoughts? Once Howard is isolated from Zion, control of the inquisition passes from Clyntahn to the local monarch to act as a secret police to squelch dissent... all in the name of God, of course.

From a brutally Machiavellian perspective, that's not bad at all. Since the secular usurpation of CoGA authority expedites the balkanization of of Zion's command and control. If locals take on the mantle of persecutors, then when Charis eventually gets around to straightening out the secular inquisitors the locals will be very glad to see them. At that point the CoGA and the local aristos have failed them. The EoC will be doubly diealized by comparison.

Hi PeterZ,

After the war, I suspect it will be open hunting season on all inquisitors, and those on Howard may be so easy that they're reserved for recreational practice, or training new inquisitor hunters, though being a member of the inner circle may make it too easy.

So the amount of time they could be state snitches might be rather limited.

I had this idea that church properties could be raided to aid the war at some point. If howard properties suddernly were being robbed, then the inquisition would blame the locals. the locals would blame the neighbours, or even the church went they attempt to force compensation.
