Hi Pokermind,

Though two smiles on ends of long sign and changed 'I' to 'WE' and word order putting please on the end.

I like your WAG likely the spy mistress

She is the one who can move around the map while the Abbess holds on to the administrative and educational reins of the Order, and can be risked in the sort of high-importance ventures that the 'Exodus from Zion', the 'Siddermark Insubordination', and her current 'Unveiling to Merlin' represent.

My WAG anyway.

btw.: Kudos on your good initiative with those signs; but why make two? That's going to be wasteful of space, I think. You should make one saying:

"Thank you RFC, may I please have another Snippet?"

Oh and on a completely unrelated note:

Why is everyone assuming Kohdy learned Spanish through a NEAT? We don't know how long the "demon" held him prisoner; perhaps he learned Spanish the old-fashioned way. As I understand it, you can gain a limited degree of proficiency in a foreign language with a few months of intensive study. I don't see how teaching Kohdy Spanish, in addition to whatever other revelations the "demon" made, would be useful, but we have very little actual information about these events - just hundredth-hand hearsay, really.

Shan Wei, and presumably her sleepers, new that Nimue's PICA was going to awaken. Jeremiah Knowles left information that would prove Nimue/Merlin's Identity. One of the things Shan Wei and Pei Wei knew about Nimue's PICA was that her last upload was for a vacation in the Andes -- Where Spanish is the primary language. The choice of Spanish is either a incredible coincidence or a deliberate choice aimed at passing information to Nimue's PICA.

Except Jeremiah Knowles admitted that he wasn't supposed to know about Nimue and only learned about her by accident. Which means NONE of the sleepers are guaranteed to know about Nimue because none of them were supposed to know in the first place.

So you believe that Nimue's Andean Holiday upload and Kohdy's change to Spanish in his journal is mere coincidence?

Yes?

I mean, it's not like Weber hasn't used pure serendipity and luck before to move the plot along. Ask one Admiral Pierre of the People's Navy.

I think I know where Kohdy's knowledge of Spanish comes from:

runsforecelery wrote:The command crew (under the original plan) were to be given two options once the colony was fully up and running. Option A would be to have their own memories adjusted to delete any memory of high technology and then to join the rest of the colony population. Option B would be to retain their memories, but in that case they were supposed to live in isolated communities, with little or no contact with the rest of Safehold. This, in fact, is why Zion was located in such a relatively inhospitable surroundings and why the Alexandria Enclave was located on what equated to Antarctica. The youngest of the command crew could be expected to live to a point well past the end of the "complete ban on technology" period by the original mission planners, and if they chose to remain in one of the very small "high-tech" enclaves, they would also have children who would receive the same life-extending technologies. Their power supplies would be buried deep, their use of any sort of radiating technology would be held to an extremely austere (and shielded) level, et cetera, but they were supposed to retain the technological "seed corn" for the descendents of the other colonists once the initial hiding. Was over.

It seems to me that if you want to consider Occam's razor here, this requires at least as many assumptions as assuming that Kohdy got his Spanish through a neat. Where would the demon have learned Spanish? Yes you can pick up a language in a few months of basic study to the extent of reading and even speaking in a very basic way. But getting to the point of being able to write with any degree of complexity and nuance takes much longer...more like years. Kohdy apparently used Spanish because he was intimately familiar with it and comfortable enough with it to use it to keep his journal. The "neat" theory probably nmakes at least as much sense as the "demon" theory.

Why would you assume there was a Spanish download at all for that trip? IIRC, this was supposed to be an extreme sports holiday, not a cultural exchange. Lots of English speakers down there... it encourages the tourists to show up.

Why would there not be? With the capability to download complete fluency in a matter of seconds via NEAT implants, it would be a simple precaution to add for an "extreme sports holiday" with the possibility of landing a hang-glider away from the local tourist venues.
