Nynian is the daughter of a Grand Vicar who was son of a Grand Vicar and so on. Nynian is in effect bastard Queen of the Church from one of the Ruling Dynasties of the Church. Could she also be a descendent of THE Nynian Rychtar (of Helen of Troy type fame)? A Scion of the Siddermark Rulers and The Harchong Emperor.

I think that is possible given the TextEv. It leaves us with Nynian being not the head of the SSK but one of the purest Aristocratic individuals on Safehold, i.e.;
Church Leadership, Siddermark Rulers and Harchong Emperor are her ancestors.

Running her DNA will light up the Scoreboard! ALso with the Tomb still in existence, Kohdy's DNA should be recoverable and full identification available.

The Consummate Serial Tease (AKA: RFC) must be squirming in his chair at the pleasures of his torture - I know who wrote the Book of Schueler without a doubt! :twisted: :o :lol:

Is the vicarship passed through inheritance? My understanding was that it was not (although, admittedly, I do not follow the Church politics side of the series closely). While there are definitely families who join the Church as a matter of family tradition, I thought the vicarship was won through campaigning and influence. One cannot simply inherit leadership.

Hmm, RFC wrote the books and invented Safehold including the book of Schuler. However I would not compare the sweet torture of our suspense waiting for the next snippet as the punishments of Schuler, though sometime it feels like it. ;)

While RFC might tease us I doubt he throws a tantrum like Clynton tearing up the house when our surmises are correct like Schuler would, Sharon is after all armed :D

Poker

PS @Potato, the Vicarage is not inherited, however having Daddy Vicar helping your progress in the Church couldn't hurt your eventually becoming a Vicar ;)

The textev tells us she in daughter of a Grand Vicar who was the son of a Grand Vicar and had more Grand Vicars in the Family. Like all political systems, Power does pass down the Family line if it can be managed. IMHO to be a Vicar would be one thing but to be a Grand Vicar implies more. To have many in one family hints at lofty status and traditional roots in the Church.

AFAICT, sons do not automatically inherit positions of power in the CoGA. However they do inherit political connections in the form of neoteny, family wealth, and so on and so forth.

The Grand Vicar is an elected position and the people who vote him into office is AFAICT only the Vicarate. And more likely than not, the person voted into office was a Vicar himself. So to be Grand Vicar, you either need a lot of political power or as in the case of the current Grand Vicar, the backing of someone with alot of political power.

And politically corrupt as the CoGA is, it should be no surprise that the sons of well connected Vicars and Grand Vicars have a leg up as far as getting promotions, ladder climbing, getting prestigious positions, and just accruing power in general.

The textev points to ruling families clearly. An analogy could probably be made to Rome especially later republican and onward. There is mobility but it is limited and certainly hard to overcome in one generation. Same with even Charis: The Duke of Darcos' children will never be emperor but it is quite possible one of his grand children or great grandchildren will be.

Just look at American Politics with the Kenedys, Bush, and Clintons for how political power can flow in families.

Yes, you don't need a formal aristocracy to have ruling families. Just the family heads having wealth and power and no compunctions about favoring relatives is sufficient.

My point was Nynian herself is a Scion of the most powerful Families in the Church. If She is also descended from The Nynian Rychtar of historical fame, then she has one of the highest pedigrees of any character in the books.

HER SUPPORT STRUCTURE could be beyond just the SSK. She has family, friends and associates seemingly everywhere. The SSK seems to be an integral very secret organization within/around the Church. The Mother Part of Mother Church - Hmmmmmm
