The place where we found "Nynian" the first time around, sitting smack midstream in the best intel watering hole from the most powerful organization on Safehold, when coupled with her later mobility, makes me think she is not the Abbess of the Sisters of Saint Khody, but rather the Abbesses' XO, the 'Spy-Mother Superior' 8-) ... whatever the Sisters actually call that position; and which likely contains their direct-action arm (such as it is, and what there is of it ...).

She is the one who can move around the map while the Abbess holds on to the administrative and educational reins of the Order, and can be risked in the sort of high-importance ventures that the 'Exodus from Zion', the 'Siddermark Insubordination', and her current 'Unveiling to Merlin' represent.

My WAG anyway.

btw.: Kudos on your good initiative with those signs; but why make two? That's going to be wasteful of space, I think. You should make one saying:

"Thank you RFC, may I please have another Snippet?"

Oh and on a completely unrelated note:
Thank you RFC, may I please have another Snippet?

What would be funny is get OWL to whip up a fake antique, the Sword of Schuyler to present Clynton. Then in a rage he uses it to cut up his toilet flooding the basement of the temple. This pisses off the avatar in the basement that sentences Clynton to the punishment of Schuyler

I'm betting that Merlin through Nynian is going to get detailed information on what's going on inside the temple/church which they will be able to capitalize on and I'm expecting several more rage scenes with Clynthan too. :D

You know, just giving Nynian a Spanish/English dictionary could raise quite a few eyebrows depending on just what "definitions" are in it.

For example, earth/terra means ground. But it's also a proper name for a PLACE.

Unless OWL and Nahrman do ALOT of editing, there's going to be lots of words in any dictionary they have that will give away all sorts of concepts that Langhorne didn't want Safehold to have. Words like:

Christian
Muslim
Jew
Buddhist
Pantheon
Reincarnation
Starship
Copernican
Catholic
Protestant
Animism
Deist

etc etc etc...

Here's a thought. We have contradictory info on Scheuler. The Book and the Key. Maybe he did have a change of heart and then recorded the Key message. So perhaps Khody did go and talk to Scheuler who then talked to Chihiro who killed both Khody and Scheuler but was mortally wounded ala Horus and the Emperor in Warhammer 40K. "What happened to Scheuler and Chihiro?" "Oh they left" :) Just random wild guessing. lol

She approaches Merlin- They have their long conversation. Merlin reports to his own "inner circle". Then the whole of it is played back to us- mostly in first person narrative- via Merlin's memory.

Why not just have the conversation?
Not that I object to the writing style- It's just a very interesting way of going about it.

This can be a way for the author to keep back bits of information he's not ready to reveal.

I do not believe MERLIN will just translate for them. He may tell them, "If I tell you what it says, there is no way for you to believe me - it is just a matter of trust. If I give you the means of learning Spanish so you may translate it yourself, You will KNOW what he said.

OWL should be able to fabricate a holographic teacher and give it to the Sister & Brothers. In any event Merlin will get a look at the journals and know what they say.

Since this is new ground with an equal (perhaps greater) influence in society as St Zhernau. This may get general approval of the leadership.

Weren't Knowles and Sarmac contemporaries of Kohdy?
I am not young enough to know everything!

Well, since OWL is going to have to print it she can do all the editing she wants in the process, can't she?

PeterZ wrote:I follow the logic, Drak, but your initial suspicion was most likely correct. Khody was a crew member that truly believed in Langhorne's vision. He might have believed that the low tech society only needed to be around for a limited time and not indefinitely.

Except that's precisely the opposite of Langhorne's vision which was to brainwipe all the colonists and keep Technology banned forever. Your second sentence is precisely Shan Wei's position and the original mission orders. Any crew member who believed that initially would have been fighting against Scheuler and Chihiro, not for them.

PeterZ wrote:Recall that Nynian reports that he fought another crew member who half convinced him that Shan-wei was not guilty of what she was accused of doing. Whatever that was. Whatever she was accused of doing by other crew members couldn't be what the Writ proports. They knew better.

She reports nothing of the sort. She reports he fought a 'demon'. The idea that was another crew member is entirely your take on it.

Why should a crew member be astonished that another crew member would show him mercy, to the extent that the experience challenged his whole view of the conflict? Now a Safeholdian spared by someone he had been taught was a monster of moral depravity or a literal demon, one can see it. Crew members are most unlikely to have simply characterised Shan Wei as having 'fallen into evil', been wrong headed, insubordinate, flouting Langhorne's authority , a traitor to the race maybe, but 'fallen into evil' is pure church propaganda for the rubes. Nor is a crew member likely to have trusted Scheuler with any serious doubts - they sure knew he didn't represent God and wouldn't look kindly on dissent. It is very hard to see what kind of revelation could have so shaken a crew member that it turned him. All these things become much easier to explain if Khody was a colonist, whether of first or later generation.
