What does the Temple look like?

The furniture I meant is the old 'holy artifacts' stuff etc; the chairs that conformed to your body to make you more comfortable.

When that stuff wears out after several centuries of use, is it repaired or replaced from somewhere in the basement or is the temple gradually running out of some of the things it uses to impress pilgrims and visitors?

Regarding the food, given 24th century federation tech, how automatic or how many unseen robots are involved in the food processing after its delivered?

I can see both ways being done, so I'm curious.

Oh, that's easy.

The food is imported to Zion and the Temple from outlying farms with the possibility that certain delicacies are imported at great cost. The Temple kitchens are likely "miracles" of Federation technology, at least insofar that the stoves and ovens are likely electric and never need to burn anything, although I doubt there are any microwaves. And of course faucets provide hot water on demand. There might even be knives and other utensils which never dull and never corrode or rust. With those caveats, the food is likely prepared like food is all over Zion and the rest of Safehold.

Furniture if they aren't "holy artifact" originals like wooden chairs that shape themselves to the person sitting in them are luxury goods purchased from craftsmen. Only the best for rich and powerful Vicars after all.

I don't think ANYTHING has worn out and been in need of replacing yet. At least, there's no mention in the text and such, especially with all the mental commentary about how divine artifacts all look eternal and not subject to wear and tear.

If anything, even the chairs, needed replacing, I think someone would have noticed by now. As I've said before, Federation tech is VERY Ragnarok proof. Anything that's not a living organic thing (like a human being) can go a long time without visible wear and tear whether is through sheer toughness or nanotech self repair mechanisms.

And we know Fed tech includes nanotech self repair systems because Merlin has that built in to his PICA body. You don't need to harvest new minerals when you can simply put the old ones back in place, and Fedtech Ragnarok proofing means it's near impossible to permanently abrade material in such a way that it's inaccessible to repair nanites just through routine use.

Like I said, except for the kitchen fixtures (stoves, ovens, etc), I think all the food is prepared the old fashioned way: by hordes of human servants. No robots or anything special automation is used in food preparation. I doubt there are freezers for food storage, although with Zion winters, freezing foods for long term storage wouldn't be too hard even outside the Temple.

Hell, when Clyntahn was put on kitchen duty, he was described as hand serving food like a servant. That's something automation should be doing, but it's not. So I think all the making of food, moving food, cooking food, and serving food is done by mortal human beings. If the Angels had any kind of automated food synthesis and service, it's not tech that was shared with their merely mortal successors.

Something that interested me was the mention that Clyntahn apartment was on the fifth floor [I seem to recall]. Given his size [deduced] did he walk up & down those stairs or is there some sort of lift?

There are suggestions through out the various books that the various orders are headquartered in other buildings, not the central temple.

Also with the assassinations of the various vicars, it was implied that some were killed in their residences and by implication those residences were not in the Temple building.

As for the guards barracks, there is no reason for them to be in the temple building, although it is possible.

Perhaps certain people are ENTITLED to living quarters, but some don't make use of them. The number of Vicars seems to be variable, so the Temple would need more than just enough space for living quarters. Of course, after the executions there was more than enough space..

the only description we have of the temple comes from Josephus. the date on that is roughly (as remembered) circa 90 CE. So look in the Jewish wars ...

Uh not the only description of the temple in Jerusalem, King Salomon's temple is described in Kings:7 and dedicated in Kings:8.

I thought the kings reference was to the 1 st temple ( destroyed circa 586 BCE), while Josephus refers to the 2 nd temple which has the wailing wall as a remanent. So the analogy is the pocket nuke destroyed the first temple, the current temple is the second temple.

Without knowing the plan at all well, the building that comes to mind to represent the great cathedral would be congress in Washington.
