Perhaps information on what's in the basement, or perhaps how to attack the OBS. Nimue's first language was Spanish coming from South America IIRC.

Nimue's Mom was Swedish, her Father was Welsh, and she was raised in Wales. Not real sure where South America came from.

Oops! I remembered her last download to the PICA was planing a hang-gliding expedition to the Andes [OAR paperback page 44] so I assumed she was from South America. Well now we know. Thanks RFC.

My guesses about seijin Kohdy. Only the great treecat memory singer, runs for celery knows for sure and will reveal the truth in their own time. Runs for Celery is a very unusual memory singer, not only being male, which is unusual enough to be going on with, but whose memory songs are unique. Unlike other singers, RFC, does not feel compelled to restrict his songs to events that actually happened. Even though many of the events in his songs are quite similar to actual events, RFC feels free to add his own philosophical spin and tell the tales the way he feels they ought to have happened.

So, seijin Kohdy was probably military, might have started as a marine but probably evolved into spec ops and possibly intelligence work, handling the most risky black ops work.

I see seijin Kohdy as very much like Kevin Usher in the Honorverse. A highly skilled individual who was instrumental in winning the revolution or war of the fallen but later became disillusioned when the politicians & power hungry bureaucrats co-opted the revolution and perverted its ideals.

I think it likely that there were more than two factions in the war of the fallen. Things would have been absolutely chaotic after Langhorne, Bedard? and most of the leadership around Langhorne were wiped out.

Kohdy belonged to the Chihiro, Schuler faction. The real Schuler of the key, not the psychotic monster who wrote the so-called Book of Schuler. This group probably believed in a church that would keep humanity ignorant of the truth until it was safe to reveal it. They were likely opposed to those who thought the truth should never be revealed and wanted to turn the church into a ruthless totalitarian theocracy. At least until the theocratic leaders emerged from, cryosleep, memory storage or whatever they used to preserve themselves for a thousand years. Upon their emergence or reincarnation they could decide what to do and where to lead the society they had created, assuming the gbaba hadnt found them.

As for writing in Spanish and the difficulty of decrypting it. Kohdy might have been the only one on the planet with an idiomatic knowledge of Spanish. If Spanish had become a dead language in the federation or if Langhorne had purged from his databases all languages other than his (and DWs) bizarre safeholdian "English". After all if their was another known language, it could raise questions about the creation myth. Where did this other language come from? Who were the people that originally spoke it? Why in a perfect world did God & the Archangels create two or more languages?

Kohdy probably started writing in Spanish and founded the order of Kohdy and wrote the "children's" tales when things started to go bad politically, about the same time Schuler passed on the key of Schuler. Both were probably efforts at the long term reform of the Church to make a Church more like what they had envisioned during the war of the fallen.

The head of Nynians order and likely one or two others may well have a translation or the key to translating the Spanish text that Nynian is not aware of. Kohdy, like Saint jerneau, may have been aware that there was another string to Shan-Weis bow. Kohdy may have been only writing for his own faction and someone like Schuler may have also known Spanish.

Aivah believes that Kody's reputation was changed after all the Adams and Eves had died off -- no text evidence (so far) about Kody being also dead at the time of the 're-write'

It was likely a situation where he felt he had to put his "treasonous" thoughts into writing for his own sanity but didn't want the Command Crew to "hear" about his treasonous thoughts.

If he had written his treasonous thoughts in Safehold English, anybody who saw his writings would have reported them.

As it was, nobody could understand it so nobody thought to report it to the Command Crew.

That is an interpretation that I find reasonable in some aspects but not in many others. The point we are talking about is after the WAtF and most of the command crew were radioactive dust. We don't have textev as to who was in charge and making the decisions.

Writing for his own benefit or sanity is a stretch when it appears he was writing for others in English. Why leave the writings at all?

Khody seemed rather sane and dedicated to the enjoyment of life. He also seemed to be an individual that by reputation, action and ability was not one to fear retribution in his lifetime. Only some time after death was his history removed from record. It seems to me he was feared by the administation of the Church not the other way around.

RFC will give us more at a later date but I expect Khody wandered widely and was not in the control of the Early Church.

I have a few thoughts about this. (Okay, I admit it is becoming my hobbyhorse.)

First.
Diaries are mostly kept for the writers own need to order his/her thoughts. To aid one’s memory and are mostly not intended to be read by anyone else. They are intended for private use only.

Second.
In the unlucky event his diary fell in the hands of somebody else, his most private thoughts should stay private. Writing in a code only he could decipher.

Third.
He probably did not realize the power of a big AI computer with the complete Terran library at its disposal. That makes it a possibility that he was reeducated with a NEAT, learned Spanish on a whim, but did not possess the integrated knowledge one gets from living in a culture.

Fourth.
I think most people keep writing in their diaries until the end. I think St. Cody stopped writing in his diary because he died.

Fifth.
The last eight month in the diary are completely in Spanish. It was not going good for his side in the war.

Sixth.
Remember Tsjechov’s gun. The Schueler in the hologram is a completely different person from the one that wrote the book of Schueler. Cody is not the only one who’s history is rewritten.

And last but not least.
A war’s history is (re)written by the winners of the war.

As I read through all the speculation I wonder if RFC smiles or slaps his head as he reads the comments. (or both)

My guess is that he laughs uproariously at how far we'll stretch a statement to support our hypothesis. Every so often I imagine he reads something expecting another good laugh and suddenly his head cocks to the side like a dog's and he says, "Say what?"

edited because the head belongs to the dog, not the pack.

Depends on the comment. It's the great ones that cause him to do both at the same time. ;)

I suspect that he agreed with Langhorn at the beginning and continued to support Langhorn's ideals. Where I suspect he became emotionally conflicted was in the execution of those ideals. While he still believed in the ideal and wanted to support it, the reality of the wars, persecutions etc by his own side made it very difficult. Essentially it became harder and harder for him to believe that the ends justify the means.

Possibly or he was shocked at what Langhorne actually did to the Alexandria enclave - considering Langhorne 'walked' the kinetic bombardment across the area and ensured it was hit multiple times. (I believe textrev is in BHD when Merlin was looking at the site) It would have only required 1 decent sized rock to wipe it out.
The very nature of bombardment unleashed by Langhorne is not the action of a sane person it is the act a sociopathic-megalomaniac who doesn't like having the thought of anyone being in a position to thwart or question him.

IMO he was someone who was close to or part of a group within the command group. If he had been military then his loyalty would have immediately suspect due to Kau-Yung Pei moderate stance and being kept out of the loop. Of course the possibilities are endless and we will be told when RFC lets us know - in these cases I usually find myself going DOH!!! :o
