One of the best references to a long lived empire of feline types is, in my humble opinion, Larry Niven's Kzinti. There are a great many others out there, so take a look at them and see what they have to say about the subject,as well as what they have to offer. I do, however, have to agree on the subject of grammar, syntax, and sentence construction. I am by no means an English major- couldn't bloody well diagram a sentence if my life depended on it- but if you want to be an Author, these things are important. If you want folks to understand what your universe is about, you must do so in a format that many others will be able to get their heads around. Please understand- I am in no way disparaging your storyline, or the history that you've obviously spent a lot of skull-sweat on; I'm just saying that you should communicate it in the fashion that those who choose to read for a hobby ( or a profession!) will be able to understand. My own best answer to the old question as to what constitutes a man ( human) is: Man is the only animal that communicates through the written word. I wish you the very best of luck in your endeavors! ====================================

I know my Grammer isn't good, that's why it's not up to snuff. I'm too old to relearn the proper way.

No. You're NEVER too old to learn. The instant you think you're too old to learn, you may as well go and sit in your grave. The whole point of trying to sort things out in advance is to find the weak points and fix them. If your grammar is a weak point, you should try and fix it. Refusing to learn is willful stupidity. Something that no author can afford to have. Writing a story without proper grammar is like trying to build a skyscraper without foundations. No matter how grand the plan, no matter how detailed the blueprints, it'll end up as a pile of shattered, twisted wreckage that people will look at simply to marvel at how bad it is and laugh at how stupid the attempt was. Learn. Grammar. Without grammar, the story will die before it can be born. No author made it to the top without grammar. ~~~~~~

A simple suggestion for you is to use spell and grammar check. I copy/pasted what you had last written on the other thread into a Word blank document, then ran spell and grammar check and it lit up red with suggestions on more than half the words. That would be a start to both make your prose more readable and to begin educating you on how to write. Don't depend on it though as it still makes many mistakes itself.
Hoping that it doesn't depress or discourage you but Michael is correct, to be a writer you have to master the boring basic bits, as well as having inspirational ideas. |

On this forum like most forum I can't find the spellchecker, or how to activate it.

If all else fails, there's always the Mk1 Eyeball... Or do what Daryl did and use Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V to put what you've written into Word so you can use the spellcheck there. Just don't rely too much on the spellcheck, it only checks the spelling of the word, not whether or not the word is the one that should have been used.

Write your initial drafts in MS Word, and use the built in spellcheck there. Once you have reviewed your work, then copy (control + c) then paste (control + v) into this space, or an on line forum if you choose to go that route. If you are using a non Microsoft product like Apple "Pages", the end result is still the same; write, spellcheck then post. We have seen a lot of looping around, but you (so far) have not really taken our advice to heart or put it into action. Even answering some of the "in universe" questions we are asking about your story settings would focus your attention on logical flaws in the setting and allow you to correct them. Don't think we are against you; most of us like reading good, challenging stories and since you are offering yourself up as a potential writer, we (the readers) are going to forge you in fire to get the good stories we want. I might also point out that authors like David Weber did not have the sort of forum to practice on (internet boards and fanfic sites) that you do, so take advantage of this and start writing. |

The bigger the story that you intend to write, the more backstory you need. Most of it won't make its way into the story itself, but it will let you develop the story, the character archetypes that feature in it and historical references that the characters in your story allude to.
A brilliant example of this was supplied by the fantasy author David Eddings. He created an in-depth historical record for each of the main countries of the 5-book Belgariad (and the 5-book sequel, the Mallorean). A small but representative portion of these notes were eventually published as The Rivan Codex which includes hints as to the requirements for writing fantasy (easily adjustable to sci-fi)
All of these things (or their equivalents) need to be at the very least considered, if not each planned out in several thousand words. Failure to do so will result in a markedly inferior story that lacks internal consistency (at least for the stories over 20,000 words). There is a reason that none of my stories have ever exceeded 140k words (My longest story, Harry Tano, was barely 136k words long) ~~~~~~
