She is the fifth ranking officer and depending whether the XO has a backup bridge to be manning, third or fourth on the Bridge during GQ.

Which brings up the question of restricted and unrestricted line officers. In some navies an engineering officer such as Fonzarelli would not be eligible to take command of the ship until he was the last officer left. (This is the restricted line version.) In others, he would assume command as soon as he was the senior officer (unrestricted line version). I do not recall ever seeing a discussion of which version applies to the RMN. Does anyone else?

It appears the RMN goes the unrestricted route. Ginger Lewis was Terekhov's acting exec in SoS

And lest we forget Andrew's great one-liner from HAE:

LaFollet took two or three more strides, then grinned wryly. "In case I've never mentioned it before, My Lady, you're not very much like a typical Grayson lady. Guns, unarmed combat. . . . Maybe I should hide behind you the next time it hits the fan."

Another score! And if you've ever changed diapers like this Uncle has, you'd have a righteous understanding of LaFollet's sentiment. You'd know that the smallest and prettiest bundle of joys make the biggest and stinkiest bundles of $h!+.

I don't much blame Andrew. I'd hide behind a woman wielding a weapon that barks like a banshee beast bought and brought from Hades too.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

I don't remember where exactly but I'm pretty sure that one of the books states that while the tactical track is the most common route to starship command in the RMN it isn't the only one which IMO implies an unrestricted line system as well.

Actually that's the FO speaking to his commander.

Who is Theisman, from his exec., right before they go into battle for their last time in the Yeltsin system in For the Honor of the Queen

From ART.

"And Hamish’s delightful phrase about excreting bricks is probably a pretty fair description of how ACS is going to react when Theisman starts bringing two or three hundred Republican podnoughts through the Junction!”

I would've liked to see Admiral Grimm's reaction to that transfer! I wonder how long it's been since a Havenite warship has transited a wormhole junction what with the closure of the Manticoran Junction for the entire war? I don't think there are any wormholes in the Republic aside from Trevor's Star and their warships wouldn't necessarily be traveling to any other wormholes.

Isn't that the truth Amaroq, but I think it's significantly better than seeing them hyper in thru the back door.
