It seems to me unlikely that Harrington Steading or any other dome was intended to have a population inside that single dome of 2 million. I don't believe the domes are 20 km across, but somewhat smaller. Do you have any evidence to support your idea, other than your belief that they left a "lot of extra space for expansion"?

Uhm, I think some of the City Towers on Haven and Mesa have populations in the 10s of thousands. Also, Grayson has a population of 3.2 Billion spread over 80 Steadings. Admittedly Harrington is smaller than most since it is so new but the average population of a Steading would be 4 Million give or take depending on assorted variables. That's pretty darned many. If a Tower can hold 30-40 thousand residents and you put several towers in a city the population could easily fit within your domed city. This is SciFi after all, the tech may very well support domes the size are being postulated here.

I'm pretty sure that both Harrington City and Austin City are bigger than that.

I think even the "small" project in Mueller Steading that was sabotaged was bigger than that.

In the description of Harrington City surrounding that bit of textev I cited above, Honor muses that the entire population of Harrington City would fit in a modern tower which could be hermetically sealed so no dome was required. She also notes that Grayson architecture runs to "short" buildings of 30 stories or less so that Harrington City covers much more area than a Manticoran city would.

I miss-remembered the size it was a 6000 hectare, a hectare is equal to about 2.5 acres. So 6000 hectares is equal to 15000 acres or about 23.5sq mi.

IIRC, when Honor goes back to Grayson to see the Protector in War of Honor, it's mentioned that a dome is being assembled over Austin City. I have no idea how big that would have needed to be.

Yep, I quoted that scene above.

Grayson cities seem to be roughly equivalent to modern Earth's cities architecturally, and each Steading has something like 4M people. Tashkent has been cited as half the population of an average Steading and covering 400 KM -- that would require a dome in the same order of magnitude as the OP suggested -- eg 20-30 KM in diameter and ~1KM high.

I would guess that Austin City is bigger than Tashkent -- being the planetary captol and all.

Unless I'm completely messing up the maths, the population figures for an average steading seem to be out by an order of magnitude. 3.2 billion people on Grayson divided by 80 steadings gives an average of 40 million per steading, not 4 million.

So, do a WAG guesstimate for the compressive strength needed for such a dome. Guesstimate for a solid shell will get something close enough. Simple calc.

Put numbers to things. Sheesh.

I think we need to remember to equate steadings to states or provinces. 40 million in a state/steading is reasonable while 4 million in a state/steading capital city is also reasonable.

Harrington City is not the entire steading just its capital, that's my take anyway.
