The thought occurs that "Khody" could be a corruption of "Quixote" and he could well be entirely fictitious. Nynian's organization could be the evolutionary descendant of a Don Quixote fan club. OMG- That's brilliant- (even if it's wrong) |

Based on what David Weber did in a prior book, the next scene should be the full conversation.
However, David Weber is "evil" enough to take us elsewhere in the next snippet.

Harold, it's more likely that you are pulling my chain (again). Just don't wrap it around my neck! Your point seems unlikely. According to the snippet, Nynian is grimly serious. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

You do understand that some fan clubs are deadly serious regarding the topic of their fanaticism... --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

The Snippet Forum is where the "start at the beginning 2 or 3 times a week snippets go" (done by me).
When The Majestic Wizard Weber decides to post snippets "whenever he gets the urge" and from "anywhere in the book", he posts them in the series forum (ie Honorverse, Safehold, etc) not in the Snippets Forum.

Well Nynian's organization may not know Khody is fictional.

I wonder if this might not be a good time for the Verifier to reappear in the story, both to check on Nynian's completeness and reassure her that what she is being told is true. The Wylsan's hologram might also be useful to this dance.

Others have made the main defensive points: Fan is derived from "fanatic" and fans can be deadly serious even when they know the object of their fanaticism is fictional. That's without taking nearly a thousand years of the "Whisper Game" effect -- that could have transformed "Quixote" to "Khody" -- into account. Don Quixote is just one fictional hero whose adventures could have evolved into those of "Seijin Khody" -- Buffalo Bill Cody comes to mind as another possibility. For that matter, "Seijin Khody" could be an aggregation of dozens of Tall tales, Dime Novels, and literary/mythological characters from Atlas to Quixote, with sidetrips to Oz and Narnia. Consider: One of Shan Wei's reconverted Adams or a minor command staffer telling bedtime stories to a child/children from pre-safehold memories couched in acceptable terms by attributing them to Seijin Khody. Years later, the child publishes the childhood stories told by her parent and forms a "secret society" fan club and evolution and the "Whisper Game Effect" transform the fan club into a deadly serious secret society dedicated to restoring the moral values of a Hero who never really existed. I chose Don Quixote because his delusional version of Chivalry fits the idealized world a secret society might be aimed at "restoring." Also, I wanted to get people away from the "secret society founded by Khody" meme MWW specifically eliminated. .
. . Answers! I got lots of answers! (Now if I could just find the right questions.) |
