Just done some further reading:
Gamma Rays are extremely penetrating, the smaller the wavelength (higher energy) the greater the penetration power. So practically this means that although the positrons and electrons released by the initial hits will 'only' cause havoc in their own vicinity (initially, it is a 'chain reaction' until the energy is exhausted) the gamma ray laser itself and any new gamma rays generated by the hit can travel quite deeply into surrounding materials before interacting. This means that the graser doesn't necessarily have to burn through something layer by layer - it can be hitting the wall, the contents/inhabitants of the room, the opposite wall, the opposite room and it's contents at the same time etc. This also applies to the gamma rays released by any matter that it hits - these may travel quite deeply before they release their energy as well. This means that the radiation spreads even faster through nearby parts of the ship than I previously thought. 100% turned into vapour/plasma is getting more and more likely at this stage. |

Just one quick thought to leave you with. A 10Mw directional microwave beam (read that as a surface search radar) will cook a 2lb bird (read that as seagull) that flies through it to the point that it could be served as dinner. Of course, that only happens within a few yards of the antenna, but picking up the dead birds after a system test was a pain.

When I was in the USN, I heard stories about guys baking potatoes by putting them on the end of long poles and sticking them in the radar beam.

Nah, most radar sets can't see anything that close. .

Oh my, flashback...I have to share this...Warning, big sidetrack following! The local SCA branch has long had a very active fencing group. SCA fencing is not like modern fencing (though they do use the same safety equipment as a starting point). Among other differences, the SCA allows parrying weapons and dual weapons. The usual parry objects are small bucklers or the equivalent of a main gauche, though some use two rapier. But one local occasionally used a rubber chicken during practices for fun, and at least once during a particularly frivolous event. It inspired the name of a "tavern" that was run during a number of events: Le Poulet Gauche. --------------------------------------------
