There's another reason Mike might want to have an interview with O'Hanranhan. O'Hanranhan was, after all, the newsie that leaked that faked up data tape that implicated Manticore in wrong doings in (IIRC) New Tuscany. Manticore would probably love to know where she got it, and whilst reporters protect their sources they're generally not so keen on protecting sources that lie to them.

Given that Mike has knowledge of MA mind-controlled suicide assassins, I doubt she'd be left alone with anyone who comes from the heart of the League. Hell when Verge resistance reps started showing up, Alfredo was present for this very reason.

Oh, I concur that she won't be alone. But I'm sure that the Marines on-board the ship will make very sure that there is no suicide devices and at least one will be present in any meeting.

And has Alfredo been home recently enough to know what the treecat clans are now doing and/or to share the mind-glow of infected two-legs from the Memory Singers? We simply don't know.

But there is no obvious threat from O'Hanranhan....she's just a reporter, more able than most, doing her job. Better if Alfredo was present when questioning that piece of work representing Manpower on the Mesa Board of Directors.....

Ooohh, I hadn't thought of that--Mike would be very interested in that tidbit, and having Alfredo with her when she asked that question might be possible......

Thanks Palmer, nice insight.

I don't think Alfredo's going to be far from Mike's side in the foreseeable future. As of Shadow of Freedom his person has been reassigned to Mike's security detail precisely so she can have a furry lie detector on hand whenever needed. Given the knowledge the GA now has about the MA's assasination nanotech, 'whenever needed' is going to be pretty much 24/7, especially when Mike is having contact with someone from outside her fleet.

News reporters are also very keen on protecting all of their sources, even ones that lie to them. they just likely don't trust or use that source again, rather than exposing the source. It would do a lot of damage to her reputation if she outed her source, and she is supposed to have a very clean reputation in regards to her journalistic integrity.

There's no "source" to protect in that case -- at least not for Audrie. The fellow reporter who shared credit for breaking the story was the source of the tape, Audrie just used her connections to verify it as having the proper codes and that it wasn't tampered with after the codes were affixed.

Nimitz didn't need previous experience to sense Tim Mears problem (nor did Honor) and Ghengis(?) didn't need previous experience to detect the Assassin in the Torch throne room. I don't think it will make much differences if Alfredo encounters a programmed assassin. The only thing sharing with the memory singers would do is shave a few micro-seconds off the response time.

I think you may be onto something in the sense that Alfredo notices her reaction to the revelations about the MAlign, possibly the speculation about the assassin nanotech that confirms she knows far more than she should; 'becoming a person of interest' or simply how she reports the interview so differently from what she actually discussed with Mike and other interviews that may alert the the GA she has an agenda near the MAlign's.

Her current reporting seems to be establishing her anti-Mesa credentials, so her initial reporting of the GA could very well be positive, until she comes out supporting the RF instead.

But Audrey doesn't know anything about the nanotech. She doesn't even know about the Alignment, though she has been speculating about it. And as a reporter, she would be speculating too. What exactly do you think is going to show up in the treecats senses as different from what you would expect from an extremely intelligent, inquisitive, ambitious, and aggressive investigative reporter?

That was the question after Storm from the Shadows but after Cauldron of Ghosts that idea is getting a little threadbare. As I mentioned up thread I still haven't gotten back to Cauldron of Ghosts yet in my latest re-read but I recall it reading like she was quite aware of her roll in the Onion regardless of if she is fully inside.

I think you are misremembering CoG. Audrey knows she is inside the Onion, but she realizes in CoG that she is not as far into the Onion as she thought. She certainly doesn't know about the nanotech. As I recall, she also has not heard the name "Mesan Alignment" except from Manticore.

[edit]Okay, I'm wrong--should have double checked before writing.

Cauldron of Ghosts wrote:O'Hanrahan had never been part of the plans for Operation Houdini. In fact, she'd never heard of Houdini, other than as the name of an obscure ancient magician and trickster. But she was one of the tiny handful of human beings who knew not only of the Mesan Alignment's existence, but of its actual purpose as well

I still am not convinced that an interview that Audrey, not Mike, is running would lead to her accidentally revealing any emotions other than what you would expect in a reporter of her ability and ambition.[/edit]

Like Zilwicki & Cachat, she figured out Houdini from the outside, and has been pushing the line that the Ballroom is responsible for the atrocities, while knowing otherwise. Interviewing Henke or Cachat, she's got to have some uncertainty of which way to go: act like (a) she still believes the Malign's cover story, or (b) she coming around to believing the GA's theory is possible -- giving credence to their claims about the Malign's existence and strategy. She can have the best poker face in the galaxy, but there's got to some emotion roiling underneath.
