1) The coding was removed during a standard upgrade to make the forums work better.
2) Someone pointed out a possible privacy concern (although a simple opt-out of birthday notification would have worked...)
3) Someone worried that people would take a birthday notification as an invitation to see how old they were...
Anyway, I was just wondering what on earth happened to it?
