Howdy all,

The new details of Dohlar on the online map are interesting but confusing.

There are more canals and high roads, which is cool for indicating HFQ's possible action areas, but some of nominal the high roads according to color seem more like canals in that they terminate at rivers or canals, while both sometimes seem overly indirect given construction costs even for the CoGA, and some rivers aren't usefully connected by canal when the direct distance is far less than some canals.

Is it a map color problem, ie what appear to be high roads are sometimes really canals?

Your insights will be appreciated.

Which online map? The one accessible through the FAQ tab/Pearls link doesn't show roads and canals.

Hi weird Harold,

From the pearls of Weber at fifth imperium, as of MTaT, and often updated since, but without the Kyplynger forest details from LaMA.

That where the Pearls link in the FAQ supposedly leads -- why not just provide a link so everyone is looking at the same map?

Hullo, everybody,

I believe you mean this map?

http://infodump.thefifthimperium.com/entry/Safehold/338/0

I can see the problem, but in some places it's possible the map's scale is just too big (small? I mean it doesn't show enough details). Look, for example, at this not-so-straight road from Alykberg to Lake Sheryl. Maybe there's some city by Lake Sheryl this road leads to? There are other problems as well. There are some roads in Duchy of Fern that look like they should be connected, but the lines weren't drawn too well. There's also this orphaned piece of river in Duchy of Salthar (under word "Salthar" on the map) that looks like it should be connected to Gorath river.

All in all, I'd say it's still a beta version of map.

The most notable lack is any real sense of topography or any way to tell if a river is navigable. I would guess that if a river isn't connected by canals, it probably isn't navigable.

Roads apparently ending at rivers or canals is not an unlikely scenario; canals generally have roads paralleling them but there would be no need to show both on a map.

Likewise, the road from Alyksberg to Lake Sheryl wanders the way one would expect a river to wander, but if it wasn't navigable, the road would be the more important map feature.

Thanks for the link.

I'm sure there is a town at the end of that road, but it just isn't big enough to show on a map, or hasn't been named yest by RFC?

I don't think it's a beta version so much as it is a working version primarily for the author's reference. Once RFC sets something in canon, it gets added to the map so he can remember where he left it.

I appreciate that the map is a work in progress, but it would really enhance the reading of a book to be able to find the cities (and the Kyplyngyr Forest)that are referenced in the various battles. Plus, my personal want, a mileage scale that follows the map size would give a feel for the distances involved in the story. My $.02 worth. (I'm currently rereading LAMA for the nth time)

A tad OT, I wonder if Kyplyngyr Forest is named after R. Kipling... That was the first thing that struck me when I first saw the name.

Indications of topography would be nice, but what I most miss is clearly-differentiated lines on the map indicating national and geographic subdivision boundaries, roads, canals, etc. All of the lines look way too much alike. each of the categories listed above should be shown with significantly different lines. It would make studying the map much, much easier and less confusing.

I have long suspected that the Dohlaran infrastructure is incomplete in that map. Much like the original maps did not include the canals until they became pertinent to the story. The big reason for me is the Angle River. The mouth of that river could serve as a very effective port city that would feed Lake Sheryl and Angle Lake. That direct connection would cut a signifcant amount of miles off of the alternative routes available to Dohlar as well as reducing the amount of overland transports from cargo entering Gorath itself.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if we discover more details that appear in future maps.
