Silverlode island needs terraforming. Give displaced agg workers 15 acres and a mule on Silverlode. Between increased investment, poor mainland productivity, unclaimed land and the need to keep the military strong, there will be opportunities aplenty in the EoC. The mainland beyond Siddermark? Not so much.

That's why I suggested that buying women and children slaves from Harchong and Desnair to emancipate in Charis would be a wise investment. Building steam personnel transports to ship millions of people from Harchong and Desnair to Charis over 1-2 decades would increase GDP growth substantially. The money Cayleb spends to buy and free slaves will return to Charis anyway to buy Charisian goods.

Since Charis will be the best place for women to live, why not bring as many women into Charis from more repressive societies?

The issue of "upper-body strength" is a real issue regarding female infantry troops.

Also, the jury is still out concerning women in the US military.

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of problems with women in the military that appears to be ignored by the politicians and higher command.

Apparently, there are women who insist on be treated differently than the men they are serving with and are willing to claim "sexual harassment" to get away with it.

Are there women capable of serving in the front lines?

Very likely there are some but IMO Merlin should be willing to make sure that the women met the same standards that men have to met.

I just turned sixty but IMO when younger I would not have met the standards necessary to serve in the military.

Why should a woman be allowed to serve in the military if she could not met the standards that a man had to met?

I would wonder where all those women would find husbands!

Recall how many central characters are widowers. King Haarald, Prince Hektor Senior, Lord Protector, Archbishop Maikel and even Sammel Wylsyn's first wife died in childbirth. Evidence suggests there are large numbers of widowers able to remarry. These men compete with young bachelors. I doubt any influx of marriageable women will be unable to find husbands. Men will simply marry at a younger age as opportunities to make a living increase along with potential brides.

Charis does how that college. so what if they upgrade women status by making them the potentially more educated. it is already pushing the boundaries with new tech, no one will care about female scholars.
It will be decades before women will be in the proper mi,itary, but what about the militia or the emergency services? with the threat of the mainland, it might be mportant for everyone to hewlp, and even the women learning to defend themselves. Women might not be sent into burning buildings, but they could help the bucket line and the wounded.

They already have women scholars at the college. There is the chemist (the one who is now in the Inner Circle) and at least some others. There doesn't seem to be anyone having fits about them, so their presence is clearly not something new.

I dont mean just the theoretical subjects, but practical and real world uses as well. the knowledge needed for the new industries.

Real world uses? Like gun-cotton and the angle-glass? Or do you mean non-military uses? I'm sure there are some already, but the books are so focused on the war that most of the new discoveries mentioned are military.

I believe Mrs C J Walker might do more yet to upgrade the status of women. Perhaps that would be C J Wahlkhyr.

Agreed- no matter what sector of society they are entering, having strong role models is key. There are established role models now for Safeholdian women in politics and academics, and you could add Ms. Phonda in the realm of economics, but she flies so far under the radar, her influence as 'role model' will probably be minimal for some time (but her influence is being felt in every other way!). And now as of the end of LAMA, we have sai-jin Nimue stepping out as a visible model of a female using a weapon (I know, I know, she's not strictly speaking, a 'woman'). At least the idea is out there that a woman can take effective steps in her own self-defense!

Let's not forget the Empress Sharley gave quite a good account of herself at the Abby in Charis.

And she IS a normal human -- and at the time of the shooting, she didn't even know about the "truth" --

??Comments??
