My favorite example of production issues is the nuclear material code named FOGBANK. "The material is classified. Its composition is classified. Its use in the weapon is classified, and the process itself is classified."

It was made from 1975 to 1989. The production facility was torn down but the pilot facility was left up. In 2000 they decided to refurbish the warheads that had FOGBANK in it, but found they had this little minor problem - Nobody knew how to make it.

They had records of the process, but they turned out to be incomplete and the new production process didn't produce usable material.

It took about a decade for the process to be properly reconstructed and new material to be produced. It is said that a large part of the problem turned out to be an impurity in one of the ingredients was actually critical to the product working as expected, so when the more highly purified material was used in the 2000's the process failed to work.

Hi kzt,

True, of course, but it could work the other way also, like Grayson compensators. Manticore & Co could happen on a better way than the MAlign has.

Does the MaAlign have the Sreak Drive II. Between the destruction of the lab, the virus, the Fall of Mesa, and the loss of scientists working on the project: How far has the project has progressed since the Fall of Mesa?

Their intelligence assets kniows the streak drive maths, so uses that to help develop it. manticore has two things going for it, extreme minuisation of tech ands multi drive missiles, so i wonder iftthose two factors could help with the size issue in the streak drive.
In a story I read, an engineer claimed to have discovered a way to reach high hyperspace bands, she had studied, which components had been stressed, destroyed or damaged by previuos attemps to breach the hyperspace barrier to the next band. Those parts she strengthen, replaced, improved and augemented. Those improvements allowed the ship to breech bands higher up.
So it is potentially possible, existing shis can be retro fitted to allow for improved engines.

The alliance has the ability to draw upon their pool of scientists, while mesa has fewer numbers due to secracy.

If they can capture a darius station, then they could gain their databasr. that tech would revolutionise their ability to keep ahead of other militaries.

I recall no such story about an engineer claimed to have discovered a way to reach high hyperspace bands in the Honorverse. Are you getting another series mixed up with the Honorverse?

Considering that the hardware team was off-planet and the project was considered virtually (if not totally) complete I'd guess that the MA has at least prototype hardware if not more.

No such story in the Honorverse, unless you've been reading fanfic.

Do you have any textev that they are even working on a Streak Drive II? I don't recall any such thing.

They didn't call it "Streak Drive II" but Dr. Herlander Simões was working in a group on improvements to the streak drive...

Torch of Freedom has (in passing) "Their current project was nearing its conclusion, which was both good and bad. The improvement to the "streak drive" likely to result from their R&D would be a significant plus, of course."

So it sounds like they think a new and improved version is likely in the not too distant future. Of course that was before the disruptive effects of the evacuation; so it's possible that implementing these improvements got delayed. (Or even that the R&D didn't pan out at the last minute)

Of course they also don't say what the improvements were. It might be access to even higher hyper bands; but it just as easily could be size reduction, reliability improvements, or even increased safety when entering the streak accessible bands. We just don't know <shrug>

More like Streak Drive 2.0 then :)

The strategic benefit of faster movement is a huge force multiplier. It would be crazy not to incorporate streak drive into larger ships so long as it's reasonably safe.

Defensively you have faster response times.

Offensively you spend less time travelling and have a quicker response rate to opportunities.

Operationally you can cycle units back to home base for maintenance cycles quicker. You can transfer units quicker.

Even if you take a mass penalty that means you need to chuck out some grasers or 5% of missile storage etc. it would still be worth it. You can delete the 'just in case' grav lance they fit on Manticoran SDs and put that space to good use.

I think they already did that with the Medusas and Invictuses.
