Now, I know I'm the resident romantic fangirl, and justifiably so. But the core of the Honorverse, for me, has never been the romances (I will pause while you all die of shock  ) - it's the relationships between the characters.

From Honor and Dame Estelle getting on like a house afire in On Basilisk Station to the growing warmth between Elizabeth and Eloise in A Rising Thunder, the relationships between these many, varied, and complex characters have kept me coming back to these books time after time despite more math than my high school pre-cal textbook. The space battles are glorious and the political scheming fascinating, but the core of this series is the characters and how they relate to each other.

So, what are your favorite platonic relationships in this series?

I'll kick off with a relationship I don't really talk much about, because talking about how much I love it would be like talking about having feet - Honor Harrington and Andrew LaFollet. From the moment we met him he has always been by her side, her protector, confidant, secret-keeper and loyal friend, and his quiet, unspoken love for her - and hers for him - always makes me marvel at the depth of human devotion and capacity for self-sacrifice.

For me it was the relationship, and how it changed over the course of the series, of Honor's original bridge crew. Not just how Honor interacted with them, but how they interacted with each other. The relationship between Alistair and Scotty. Rafe and Scotty. And how those relationships affected the course of the history of the Kingdom. The interactions of the original crew, the lessons they learned and passed on and how their future relationships with both their juniors and their seniors changed everything about the story as it was written.

I have stated that On Basilisk Station is my favorite read for so many reasons. Beginning the read in a foreign, but breathtakingly beautiful country and completing it atop a mountain peak with an astoundingly beautiful panoramic view of the heavens, after a mystic experience is only part culprit.

It is the relationships forged On Basilisk Station. Nothing can supercede the bond stitched between members of that fateful crew. Those relationships were forged out of fire. Friendships that begin that way are unbreakable. I feel as much a part of that crew as any of them!

But outside of the crew. I adored the relationship that Honor had with that old Grayson dinosaur, Howard Clinkscales. He was as much a father figure to Honor as was Couvosier. Speaking of which, Couvosier was Honor's second father.

You're right Rose, the Honorverse contains very colorful characters and relationships that draw you in. I like emotional reads.

The way Ginger Lewis treated "Wonderboy" Wanderman took me to tears. I love Ginger. I miss Ginger. Where might she be these days?

Wanderman grew a pair and kicked some Steilman ass over Ginger! Attaboy!!

Platonic timeout on these two Rose. I feel a need for a hook-up ... Cupid style!

Last seen evacuating from Weyland as part of the drill just prior to Oyster Bay, I think.

One of the reasons I love the Talbott Quadrant so is the wonderful variety of interesting relationships it has. Here's a few of my favorites (so far):

Bernardus Van Dort and Aivars Terekhov. Match made in heaven, those two - I love reading about them together and I can't wait to see more.

Bernardus Van Dort and Helen Zilwicki. Can you say 'awwwwwwww'??

Helen Zilwicki and Stephen Westman. That call he made to her in Shadow of Freedom was just precious.

As mentioned, On Basilisk Station established relationships that have lasted the entire series. Of course, some of them are gone now (goodbye Andreas; goodbye Alistair; goodbye Andrew--and just as an aside, does RFC have something against people with names starting with "A"??), but two others have been around since nearly the start, and I think have been in every mainline book (if they missed one or two, I stand (or more likely sit) corrected) are Alice Truman and Mercedes Brigham. Add Andrea Jaruwalski and Mike Henke to the mix and Honor has something of a female Harem to go with the males she has formed close bonds with (besides those dearly departed, Rafe Cardones, Fritz Montoya, Scotty and Horace....).

For a very shy girl, Honor has a knack for making and keeping close friends....

One relationship that totally blind-sided me was Princess Ruth and Berry Zilwicki. I love their bond mind you, it even makes me smile, but I can't say I expected it. I also like the way Thandi took to Ruth like a sister.

Part of me will always worry about Ruth. I just don't trust the Masadans. I inquired many posts ago about the Star Kingdom's foreign policy towards negotiating with terrorists ... that may somehow manage to kidnap Ruth.

Nobody has mentioned the absolutely close, strong, and just amazing friendship between Honor and Mike yet? That is one of the longest-running and deepest bonds in the series (notwithstanding Honor and Nimitz). The reunion scenes (e.g. when Honor comes back from Cerberus and when Mike returns after Solon) just get me every time. Just reading about Honor spontaneously hugging anyone when we know how reticent she usually is about such things... So cute.
