In any case, congratulations. I envy you.
If I get the family back to GB in the intervening, can we come visit?

Well spotted. :P Yes, I am. And yes, you absolutely may! Edinburgh is a lovely city. But I have determined that I will be at the 25th Anniversary HonorCon come hell, high water, or the Apocalypse. 8-)

Ohhh, you know what I want to know?

I want more of a window into Estelle's life. Hobbies? General day-to-day existence? Late-night chats about nothing and everything with Augustus?

Shower scene?

Edinburgh is a lovely city?! Oh...my...God! Understatement alert.

Old Town! I am sooo jealous. Green with envy. Ok, I've posted much about my obsession with castles. Edinburgh Castle is a must visit...as many times as you can. Twice so far for me. You are sooooo lucky.

Oh, if you haven't, you must try the cuisine at Ship of the Shore. May very well be the best darn clam chowder I've tasted. Hearty! And as I am sure Montgomery Scott would say "There be clams in that chowder." A-Plenty!

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

How many systems have freely chosen to break off from Haven and what is Haven's current size compared to Manticore?

Something like this came up over in the "Favorite Phrases" thread between Hanuman and roseand heathers

Well, it turns out I was wrong about the treaty’s prospects,” Pritchart went on now. “According to Leslie’s dispatch, she never got a chance to pound it anywhere. The Senate jumped all over it. It was approved with a fifty-six-vote margin over and above the two thirds majority requirement. There were only eleven dissenting votes!”

The president’s face blossomed in a huge smile, and Elizabeth felt herself smiling back.

- A Rising Thunder

Hanuman quote--
Wait, can someone who can actually do some math PLEASE do the calculation? How many members does that give the Havenite Senate?

by roseandheather » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:40 pm

2/3x + 56 = x - 11

2/3x + 67 = x

1/3x = 67

x = 201

201, if my math is correct.

And the math works, so we know the Havenite Senate has 201 members.

So..does that mean it has 201 systems, or 100 systems with two senators each (and one presiding officer), or some other division of numbers (or maybe a few senators chose not to vote, or were sick, or were back on their home planets).

So IMHO, it's between 100-201 systems.

Or not. 8-)

I wonder whatever became of the Silesian rebel movements which were tolerated by the RMN before Silesia was divided. AKA the ones that didn't attack SKM shipping, like the Logan Freedom Fighters and Zoraster Freemen based on what we see in With One Stone. Were they destroyed, did they stand down, are they still fighting (highly unlikely IMO) or did they end up on the run like smaller, and hopefully much more benign, versions of the PNE?

That...is a very intriguing question, Rogue.

Given that the story was written by someone else, the MWW doesn't have to blend it in...on the other hand, it was written by Timothy Zahn, who is now writing mainline stories in the SKM, so he should have some input, right?

My own take is that if they were in the Aldermani area, they were given exactly one warning and a short deadline to surrender, and then 'dealt' with by the Andies fleet.

The Manties probably offered amnesty and a willingness to talk. And since the SKM pretty much replaced the bosses that they had been rebelling against, I would think most of them would come in. Those that didn't would make Admiral Sarnow..grumpy.

And you wouldn't like him when he's grumpy. :o

IMHO as always.

Tolerated is probably the wrong phrase. Essentially the RMN doesn't care about other people's problems. Until you get someone at the political level to decide that you are the RMNs problem, if you don't mess with RMN people/shipping or forces and are neither doing slavery or piracy the RMN doesn't care about you.

If the SC wanted the RMN to solve the SC's problems they could have taken it up with the Queen and her government. I suspect the solution would resemble the one that ultimately happened...

I've looked up Laocoon's mythological meaning and I don't see any connection between it and the Manticoran operation. Is anyone else seeing something I've missed or is it a case of the name being randomly generated and not having any real significance? I know most Manticoran ops are like that but I just wanted to know if that was the case here.

Possibly when the operation(s) was/were developed, the name was simply randomly generated from a list. Like Buttercup or Beatrice.

Laocoon and his sons got tangled up in the coils of a serpent -- the Solarian League is going to get tangled up by the RMN. It's a bit of a stretch, but it seems to fit.

(Then again, it could just be random chance. We do know that the RMN seems to generally pick names out of a random dictionary for operations, so as not to give anything away -- compare "Operation Buttercup" to the Solarian League's "Operation Raging Justice"...)

I think there was a quote somewhere about RMN operation names being picked by computer.
