You mean that out there is a me, but clean-shaven and with an afro?

Hang on, that was me as a teenager...

IMHO, Babylon 5 was generally better than Star Trek. In fact, my top list of live-action sci-fi tv series that I have watched (and remember) is...

Babylon 5 - The best sci-fi show so far.
Star Trek DS9 - Actual multi-episode plotlines!
Battlestar Galactica (Original) - Special effects are good even today!
Star Trek TNG - So darned quotable
Buck Rogers - Colonel Wilma...mmmmmmmmm
Star Trek Original - Oft imitated, rarely equalled
Farscape - Had quite a few moments
Star Trek Voyager - Had promise, but... warp 10 anyone?
Stargate Atlantis - Good setup and great bad guys
Stargate SG-1 - Seasons 3-5 were the best
Robocop - Wonderful dark humour
Seaquest DSV - Dolphin was a better actor than half the humans
Star Trek Enterprise - Barrel scraping.
Deepwater Black - Low budget but thought-provoking
UFO - You can see the strings!
Space 1999 - Luna-tics
Andromeda - Tried to do too much
Lexx - Started ok, went downhill
Battlestar Galactica (Remake) - Jolty camera gave me a headache

...17 listed.

Stargate Universe.

Firefly.

Tripping the Rift.

Crusade was so so.

A few others you forgot.

Dark Angel, and the prequel and followup books. Although it borders on Fantasy.

Colin Baker was the best Doctor Who!

You could add the X files and Lone Gunmen to this list too. Robo cop isn't really a space show.

Tripping the Rift is CGI SCIFY comedy kind of a tamer Heavy Metal with Clowns. Great as long as Clowns don't scare you.

Stargate Universe is a more Raw Stargate TV show.

Did you mention Red Dwarf?

It is a matter of safe navigation. Space is very big and not explored. Virgin deep space is very dangerous. Nobody knows what is out there that might just ruin your day if you insist on going too fast for unknown conditions.

Warp Factor One is one parsec in 3.26 YEARS! Way too slow to get anywhere fast. Warp 4 is one pc, (parsec) in 4.64 days. Doable for short runs. Warp 6 is moving out smartly; 1 pc in 36.75 minutes. Navigation becomes a concern. Warp 7 is one pc in 2.082 minutes. Wow! Better have good sensors indeed.

Warp Factor 8 is hauling ass. One parsec, (3.26 light years) in only 5.56 seconds. You had better know exactly where you are going. At Warp 8, you begin to actually outrun your sensors. Not good. You could literally run into or through anything. Yikes indeed Sirs! Now we know. HB of CJ (old coot) Cm. :) :)

That can't be right, Voyager was 70,000 light years away, traveled regularly at Warp 7 and had a top speed of Warp 9.75. Yet was going to take 70 years to go 70,000 light years.

According to your calculations a warp 7 cruise would take 31 days not 70 years for Voyager to get home. 825 times faster at warp 7.

Where are you getting your numbers? They don't match up with any of the Trek warp scales I am aware of

Remember that I am an Old Coot. A real "Trekker". Not a "Trekkie". We were glued to the old sometimes color TV watching the first series back in 1966. High school.

Navigation is the concern. You do not want to fly through something that might disturb that double warp bubble. Known space lanes allow higher safe Warp Speeds.

Unknown space dictated either slow Warp Speeds or a military grade Star Fleet sensor suite. Sometimes both. Some space could not be attempted at Warp Speed. Not safe.

Voyager was flung clear across the Galaxy. Unknown space. A limited fuel supply. Captain Janeway got her crew, (somewhat) and her ship, (mostly) home because of luck.

Warp One is 1X light speed. Warp 2 is 2X2 light speed. Warp 3 is 3X3X3. Warp 4 is 4X4X4X4 light speed. And so on. The power requirements also jump the same. $Spendy$.

Only military grade warp engines can obtain and maintain high warp speeds. Energy intensive. You also must know exactly where you are going. Navigation. HB of CJ (old coot) Cm. :) :)

I think Spock had the trimmed sinister looking beard in the episode; "Dark Mirror", but do not hold me to it.

One class of drive I have not seen discussed here is the short range jump drive, where the ship makes a series of short range jumps in rapid succession.

This was used in Vernor Vinge's book "A Fire Upon the Deep", and was the "Stutterwarp" drive in the Traveller 200 game.

An interesting effect is that unless you are in sync with an enemy ships jumps, you effectively cannot hit them with a stutter warp missile (it will appear in "real" space and instant too early or late to hit the enemy ship). I'm sure there are other effects that can be imagined to complicate the Captain's job when using such a device.
