Do we know when semi or automatic guns are going to enter the war? While they can fire alot now, they still can fire a set number each time. they are going to face high numbers, so the ability to keep them in check is very valuable.

they're on the verge of it now they have the concept of brass cartridges in production, so its only a matter of time. but its still something which will take time...
so far they've had something close to 200 years of advancement in firearms within a few short years. I think it still may be a year or two before they have cartridge production high enough to warrant automatic weapons, but more so because they have to build the infrastructure to make it work well. automatics are far more prone to problems than single shot or even cartridge based weapons that are coming into production. with the current black powder they're using it would be a recipe for disaster, but once they get the gun-cotton sorted and ready for use it will be a lot better |

Not soon, I suspect. Charis is just distributing bolt action smokeless cartridge based rifles and revolvers. The CoGA is just distributing breech loading black-powder percussion cap rifles. Charis is still two or three generations ahead of the CoGA. The next step up would be the equivalent of a Gatling or Maxim, but either of those were not really suitable for the mobile tactic Charis is using; they're far more suited to trench warfare, which Charis or Siddarmark can't really afford. I would expect to see semi or full auto sidearms on the order of the Colt 1911A1 and AK-47 developed in the interegnum/Cold War off-screen. .

Certainly, Charis can also be doing research into optics and coming up with advanced rifle scopes to give to their scout-sniper troops.

I would expect a more sophisticated system for sighting naval guns to allow them to be used more accurately at greater range.

From a purely technical standpoint, if Charis can build a bolt action such as the M-96 Mahdrayn, then they can build the early machine guns. From a historical standpoint, the Maxim machine gun was invented in 1884. This is actually earlier in history than most of the historical bolt actions such as the Lee-Enfield (1895), Mauser M98 (1898), Springfield (1903), or the Mosin-Nagant (1891). *edited once |

I think that with the next phase of the war, there will be some set piece battles where artillery will be important in breaking the back of massive wave attacks by Harchongese infantry. But overall, I think that the pattern of a war on logistics begun in MTAT will continue which will means that the M96s being currently distributed will assume even greater inportance as swiftly moving EOC-Siddarmarkian forces cut Harchongese supply lines. More Harchongese die to starvation than battle. This round of war will probably be over before we see semi-automatic or fully automatic guns. Has the need for an automatic weapon cropped up yet? Thinking about it, war on Safehold seems to be skipping trench warfare which kind of drove developement. At least for fully automatic weapons at least.

I think the Maxim and contemporary machine guns more drove trench warfare than derived from it. It was kind of a feedback loop and trench warfare was known before WWI. We've actually seen some fairly extensive trench-works in LAMA, but Charisian forces quickly reduced them rather than settling in for an extended siege. I expect Charis to bypass the heavy machine guns like the Maxim and Gatling in favor of lighter, more mobile automatic rifles like the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), Thompson, Uzi, and AK-47. .
