I suspect that we're "confused" by how the terms were used on Earth.

I suspect that on Safehold the titles depend on how much territory/population the title-holder controls instead of who the title-holder is sworn to.

IE the Safehold Church defined a "Duke" as having so much territory/population.

A "Grand Duke" would control more territory/population than a "Duke".

A "Prince" would control even more and so forth.

The above likely applies to "independent" rulers. IE only answering to the Church not to another ruler.

Luxemburg is a typical example with fealty originally owed to the Holy Roman Empire and the Netherlands.

I'll not argue your point re the relative ranking of the two titles, but a Principality such as Liechtenstein originally had the same kind of direct personal relationship with the crown as Grand Duchies did. There were no level of fealty between the ruler of a Principality and the monarch, unlike lesser titles.

Thank you, Drak, for the reminder that Safehold is NOT Earth and that Safehold's history is not only shorter but also radically different from that of Earth.

Hi Drak,

I agree with your post except from the maps there are some barons with more land than dukes, NTM some relatively small kingdoms in the border states, without determining the status of Selkar and Myratha, so it seems very arbitrary NTM human. :D

I suspect that within any given Kingdom/Empire there is a bit more order than there is over the entire planet. Also, oodles of land with little to no population probably only rates a Baron even if the demesne should be raised to a Duky when properly developed and populated.

In addition, there may have been delays in the Safehold Church changing the ruler's title.

Prince Hektor may have ruled enough land/population to rank as a King but the Church never got around to "upgrading" his title.

Of course, Prince Hektor likely wasn't concerned enough to push the Church in that matter.

He had the power of a King and he didn't see the need for a change in title. ;)
