Or apartment, town house, condo, duplex, terrace, bunk, berth, villa, castle, palace etc....
I like houses, I don't live currently in a very big place, but then houses around here are very expensive. I'm currently downsizing from two larger houses to fit in my little townhouse /duplex. Currently 1350 sqft plus a 600 sqft basement. Slowly getting rid of two thirds of my stuff. ________________________________________

The apartment I'm in now is maybe 800 square foot. I'm trying to close on a house that's around 1500 with a garage that would comfortably fit four cars if I ripped the finished room out of it.
I've got a storage unit packed to the ceiling with my stuff and a 7x14 ft trailer that's full enough that last time I poked something into it two things fell out. I could downsize, but I'd rather part with teeth than tools and limbs would go before my guns .

Everybody's house is the same size - not big enough! I'll see your tools and guns and raise you a reloading machine in 9 calibers, swords, mace, crossbows, compound bow, computers, computer parts, car parts, electronic components, tons (literally!) of books, 1,000 CDs, 800 DVDs and blue-disks, wood and metal pieces, large drywall scraps...the list goes on...and on... I'm not near as bad a hoarder as the ones they show on TV, and I watch those shows to keep it from getting that bad. The worst thing about hoarding is it's so easy to justify -- several times in the last few months I have pulled stuff out of the hoard and put it to use. I hate to throw away stuff that's useful, and engineers can find a use for just about anything. Plus, of course, a week after you finally throw something out you need it. I'm rebuilding a back porch to relocate the solar power converter, washer and dryer (and catboxes), and turn the current laundry room into a server room/office. Already got a Harmon/Kardon receiver and Energy speakers for it. Cleaning out the porch, found a box with a complete set of Unix manuals from a 1994 device driver symposium. Anybody need 'em? ---------------- Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!! |

An article I read in the past year had average sizes of new dwellings per country. I can't remember it all but Australia had overtaken the USA for the biggest, and the UK had the smallest in Europe.
In my case the house is 2400 sqft, and associated sheds (workshop, 3 car storage, art studio, stable, and two garden sheds) would be another 2200 sqft. But there are two of us. That's not counting 5 large roofed racks for my building materials. Having a few acres eases any space restrictions. I might mention that my three adult children each have similar set ups. |

I'm saving up for a new place. But prices are so high in Calgary, it just takes so long. I'm a no debt guy so I don't finance things. I'll give myself another two years then decide if I stay were I am or if I'll go for a lake house. Man made private lakes, the in thing around here. I sure wish we had Weber like North Carolina pricing though. RFC lives in NC. Prices up here are 5-10 times as much, Beverly Hills 90210 levels.
I considered moving to the States but the taxes are so high and health care so screwy. Maybe I'll get myself a Florida winter place to escape the cold. Florida prices are also dirt cheap. Just need a place I can empty and lock up for the summer. Put everything in storage along with a nice "Winter in Florida" car. ________________________________________

2400 sqft, 4 Bedroom, 2.5 bath, with a 900 sqft basement, two car garage. I've got 3 boys and one girl. And in a few more years when they move out I'll be relocating to a new place. Probably still about the same size, but more room for my library, workshop (car and wood), and entertainment room! But the new place will only be 2 bedroom.
Probably one of the few advantages of moving all the time in the military was the ability to shed the junk. Every time I packed up and moved I evaluated what was getting boxed up. Throwing out, donating or selling accumulated crap. Of course the wife thinks the camping gear, books and movies are part of that crap.... |
