If they could access the temple control systems, then it might give them a huge advantage. if they shut down the climate control systems, the temple might not be inhabitable any more. if merlin can access the monitoring system, they know all the church plans and records.

He could have rode one in on Duchairn's shoulder and attended Go4 meetings. Yet he doesn't out of concern about detection by the temple's tech.

Why would the nannites in Father Paityr be different or less detectable to that tech?

Handwavium, maybe?

I believe the idea is to have a purely passive stealthed recordning system. Something that would see more than human eyes might see. If such a device could be attached to someone who knows the Temple and where to go to activate the Key, we could have a better idea of what awaits before they go active.

Also, if OWL and Nahrmahn had enough time might they not develop such a device? If developed, taking time to truly scope out the Temple might not be a bad idea at all. So either by crushing the AoG, occupying Zion and slowly researching the Temple in such a way or by accepting a truce and then conducting the search, the IC needs to get a much better idea of what is in the Temple.

My point is that they already have such a device with the probes the snarcs send out. Yet Merlin still worries about possibility of detection by temple sensors.

Why would nannites be different? If they could be detected, they would light up poor Father Paityr like a Christmas tree. Maybe the solution would be to infect one of Clyntahn's favorite cronies and then have him wonder what the dickens is going on if the temple defenses react!

Now that is a truly nasty idea! I like it.

Unfortunately, the only probably target is Duchairn as he is the only one that regularly leaves the Temple. I'm not sure risking the only moderate member of the Go4 would be a wise choice.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be one of Clyntahn's cronies or a named character, though. Anyone who leaves the Temple on a regular basis -- so success or failure can be gauged -- would suffice.

The angels and adams/eves had medical nanites. Given that they were walking around in the temple, it would be fairly reasonable to expect medical nanites wouldn't set off any alarms.

You are insufficiently pessimistic.

The threat from the OBS and/or whatever is under the Temple has to be treated as if it will sterilize Safehold if a threshold is crossed. SNIP.

hmmmmm - I think maybe that's being overly pessimistic... Sterlisizing Safehold would be the Gbaba's aim, not Langhorne and his mates!

I think the 'angels' and adam/eves had the full civilian range of nanites and implants, with the angels likely having command level implants and such, so the Temple systems are likely going to ignore those, unless those allowed systems were deemed forbidden after the last 'angel' died and any unauthorized implants detected were listed as enemies to be eliminated.

The OBS has no aim other than suppressing certain levels of technology. If it wakes up and the level of technology world-wide is higher than the level it is supposed to prune back to, then it will prune back the entire planet.

The OBS would have to be a LOT smarter than a simple weapons system is likely to be to to refrain because of potential overkill.

You are making overly broad assumptions and stating them as facts. We don't actually know whether the OBS has any automated programming at all. Since the goal of the Langhornites was to save humanity, I find it impossible to believe that they would program it to destroy the entire planet under any circumstances.

In addition, the OBS only has six cells loaded.

Merlin seemed to be assuming that if OBS is going to react, it will be at a specific place to surpress the violation of the proscriptions to which it is reacting. So he introduces steam by conducting his test on an island so remote that if OBS reacts, no one will know the difference.

My own wager here is that OBS is not automated and requires direction, probably from the computer in the basement of the Temple. Or, there is a suspicion that Langhorne's flagship is out there somewhere. Maybe it contains control station for OBS(shrug). It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Where is that interesting bit of Textev and why doesn't Merlin just trigger six rakuri strikes on deserted sections of Armageddon Reef?

The OBS isn't programmed to destroy the world, it is programmed to interdict violations of the proscriptions wherever they might be seen (except for the Temple.) If the violations when it wakes up are world-wide, then the interdictions -- aka Rakuri -- are also world-wide.

I'm simply making worst case assumptions, because making best case assumptions and being wrong gets you dead.
