And don't forget Captain (probably Rear Admiral or better now) Greentree; last we saw him he was Captain of the Honor Harrington; he probably has an entire squadron by now.

How many Greentree Skippers are there? I got him confused with Commander Greentree, P of the destroyer, GNS Manasseh.

It would take a miracle to not get caught. To mis-quote Die Hard "You ask for miracles. Theo, I give you the R...M...N."

Nobody on a ship blown up by the RMN will be talking about whatever they possible could have been thinking about, now will they? And the RMN does tend to use very large numbers of very deadly missiles, and the SLN defense are pretty sad....

Depends on how long it takes the captains to hit the abandon ship alarm when they see those missiles coming their way.

And I still think the only way it could conceivably happen is MA involvement and that they won't do it unless something changes their plans massively.

I want to say"poor baby", remember its only a story...

RFC has been dealing with this particular rant since at least AAC, and possibly WroH, or for 8-10 years; basically the message has been 'get over it'.

What else do you expect if HH is winning all this glory since OBS and somehow stays a ship captain?

Or were you expecting Admiral-Captain James Kirk? ;)

CS Forrester meant to write about an anonymous RN ship captain who just 'did his duty' and never got recognised for it, only Horatio Hornblower wouldn't let him. :D

One reason people read fiction is they like the characters, but characters that stay the same aren't realistic NTM boring.

How many readers would have stuck around for endless repeats of OBS?

Frankly the odds of her getting an SD or even an a DN after Nike were predictably low given the story imperative, since when would a waller with a junior captain be alone?

Raising to squadron command in FIE kept her on track book-wise, so where did you want her to jump off the tracks again?

What else could RFC do and still have a rational Honorverse?

Thank for being gentle
I realize that it won't happen, and I even realize why.
I was just voicing my thoughts :ugeek:
I hadn't realize there were other people who had mentioned this before. Hope I didn't go off on an old saw.
I am not asking for her to fall of the tracks, or regress in rank. I was looking for what others were saying, a focus on the jr. officers and such.
Of course RFC has his plans, and I still love the series, I just wanted to voice the idea in the back of my head. :)

I too long for space combat extraordinaire. It is the appeal of the series, the bait on the hook. However, there has to be an enemy in which to fight.

Same thing happened with Star Trek. I loved the space battles, superb Enterprise to Klingon/Romulan encounters. Then peace. And I had to learn to like the Klingons. Deep Space 9, the same. To give Voyager someone to fight, the writers had to 'lose' it in some far away quadrant.

The Honorverse book featuring the enemy wielding the seemingly unstoppable beam weapon made me think that they would become the new enemy. All the talk of unexplored wormholes make me think that some new powerful enemy will emerge, having discovered a wormhole into the Honorverse...bringing Honor out of retirement and uniting everyone.

The stuff that dreams are made of.

Ok did you actually watch all of Star Trek DS9? IMO it is the most combat intensive Trek TV series by far. After all its the only Trek TV series showing the Federation fighting an all out war.

And what Honorvrse book had an enemy with an unstoppable beam weapon? The closest thing I can think of to an unstoppable Beam Weapon is the Crippler. But the Crippler was useless against warships and even civilian ships were easily adapted to resist it once Manticore realized what the weapon was doing.

Hi RogueVictory,

I think you're right that Cthia was thinking of Timothy Zahn's short story "With One Stone", involving the crippler back before THotQ.

Given how little we still know about Charles, the idea he was the vanguard of some new uber-invasion boggles the mind, since what we do know is he's simply a minor scam artist that has managed to survive so far.

I rather liked the the DS9 battle scenes too, while Voyager almost became 'what can we blow up in this episode' when it wasn't ridiculously PC, though the finale with Janeway rescuing everybody while wrecking the Borg was far better than I'd hoped.

Cthia, RFC has repeatedly debunked anyone wishing for very advanced aliens invading the honorverse to unite humanity, it simply won't happen; the Creator of the Honorverse [TCotH] has spoken. ;)

While the most advanced humans around are the SL and MAlign right? :D

So you got your wish already! ;)

Actuall, The whole idea of Star Trek was use moving beyond the need for violence, to be peaceful. In The Original Series they fought very little in ships. and most of the episodes were indepth soul searching stuff.
The Next Generation was all about the exploreation of space and for Data's soul.
Deep Space 9 was the only series to be finely focused on coflict, and usally it was only one or 2 episodes that were primarily about the combat.
Voyager was all about back to basics. They new they were going of the rails with Deep Space 9 and wanted to bring the show back to the ideals of the Federation, see the episode "Meld." The had to be correct because there was no backup and no way to right things after they left. Being a do gooder doesn't make one weak, it makes one weak in others eyes.
Enterprise was gearing for war, but we'll never know how far they were going to go.
The new movies are all violence and flash, just to brng in new audiences. The Great Bird of the Galaxy would be spinning in his grave if he could.
Space combat in the Honorverse isn't dead but being that the Manticorans have a huge advantage against the Solareans then we need to wait on the Alignment for interesting fights again.

In the entire original Star Trek series, there were only 5 episodes out of 79 which depict space battles. Only 2 of those were against Klingons or Romulans. Ship weapons were fired a few other times (such as at ground facilities or ineffectually at the gaseous alien in Obsession), but those can't be considered space battles. Battles occur off-screen a couple times.

OK, you know just saying five and not listing them is going to bring out the geezers like me that watched TOS (The Original Series) when it was original...

1. The Romulan-Enterprise battle.
2. The Klingon-Enterprise battle
3. Gorn-Enterprise (the ground battle was featured, but there was a scene with the Enterprise under attack with Sulu at the helm and returning fire.
4. The battle with the Doomsday device.
5. The battle with 4 other UFP starships while the Enterprise was under control by an AI.
6. The battle with the souped-up Rigelian ship

At least those are the ones I can think of.
