Same thing happened with Star Trek. I loved the space battles, superb Enterprise to Klingon/Romulan encounters. Then peace. And I had to learn to like the Klingons. Deep Space 9, the same. To give Voyager someone to fight, the writers had to 'lose' it in some far away quadrant.
The Honorverse book featuring the enemy wielding the seemingly unstoppable beam weapon made me think that they would become the new enemy. All the talk of unexplored wormholes make me think that some new powerful enemy will emerge, having discovered a wormhole into the Honorverse...bringing Honor out of retirement and uniting everyone.
The stuff that dreams are made of.
Actuall, The whole idea of Star Trek was use moving beyond the need for violence, to be peaceful. In The Original Series they fought very little in ships. and most of the episodes were indepth soul searching stuff.
The Next Generation was all about the exploreation of space and for Data's soul.
Deep Space 9 was the only series to be finely focused on coflict, and usally it was only one or 2 episodes that were primarily about the combat.
Voyager was all about back to basics. They new they were going of the rails with Deep Space 9 and wanted to bring the show back to the ideals of the Federation, see the episode "Meld." The had to be correct because there was no backup and no way to right things after they left. Being a do gooder doesn't make one weak, it makes one weak in others eyes.
Enterprise was gearing for war, but we'll never know how far they were going to go.
The new movies are all violence and flash, just to brng in new audiences. The Great Bird of the Galaxy would be spinning in his grave if he could.
Space combat in the Honorverse isn't dead but being that the Manticorans have a huge advantage against the Solareans then we need to wait on the Alignment for interesting fights again.
