Gary Gygax, pretty sure it was the second edition of The Dungeon Master's Guide:

"...as obvious as coal pile in a ball-room."

From Claws That Catch by John Ringo and Travis S. Taylor, Chapter 24:

"Maybe we're going at this the wrong way," Miriam said, holding up her hand placatingly. "If you promise to never subject me to 'Freebird' again, I'll explain."
"Go ahead," Bill replied. "But after four straight hours of that Goth and heavy metal chither, I needed some real music."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"I should make you add the entire repertoire of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, The Doobie Brothers, .38 Special and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, most of whom I had never heard of before today and hope to never hear of again," Miriam said. "But I'll hold it at 'Freebird.' "

Miriam the ship's linguist of the ASS Vorpal Blade is unable to appreciate '70s rock. And her musical talent turns out to be key to saving the day.

Private Fraser: We're doomed!

Apparently the BBC is trying to remake Dad's Army...

This is not going to end well...

Another three or will they go all out and make six episodes before cancelling it? Just like every other show?

I was under the impression it was just the movie that they're trying to remake.

Still don't think it will be any good, they'd have been better off creating another unit with it's own characters and calling is a sequel, allowing the new one to be judged more on it's own merits (therebeil always be comparasions, no matter what you say!)

Brain Ships and stuffed bears :

One of the toys she'd had — her very favorite, in fact — had been a stuffed teddy bear. She'd made up adventures for Ivan the Bearable, sending him in a troika across the windswept steppes of Novi Gagarin, and she'd told Tia some of those stories.

"He's wonderful," Tia answered firmly. "I've even got a name for him. Theodore Edward Bear."
"Or Ted E. Bear for short?" Moira chuckled. "I like it. It fits him. He's such a solemn-faced little fellow. One would think he was a software executive. He looks like a bear with a great deal on his mind."

"I had a really nice bear in a flying suit called Amelia Bearhart." She chuckled. "I still have her, actually, but she mostly sits on the bureau in my guest room. She's gotten to be a very venerable matriarch in her old age."

"So let it be witnessed and sealed by yon bear."

'Oh, oh' he said in English. Evidently, he had completely mastered that language.
